Gyeongju walnut pastry gift set for parents in Busan: Buja Hodu

In short

Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. For Chuseok, two 15-piece gift sets mixing red bean, pea cream cheese and matcha were bought at Buja Hodu — one box went to parents in Busan and the other was opened as a family snack — along with a look at the bojagi wrapping and delivery orders for holiday sets. The red bean pastry packed with walnuts and the cream-cheese-forward pea cream cheese were the clear favorites.

Why Buja Hodu's gift set was chosen for Chuseok

Chuseok is coming up soon, and holiday gifts are always something to fuss over! This time the walnut pastry gift set from Buja Hodu was chosen for relatives back in the countryside ^^ There are plenty of snacks along Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, but honestly, after tasting Buja Hodu it was so good that shipping options got asked about right away!

At the entrance of Buja Hodu there's a sign saying holiday gift set orders are being taken! They also do a neat, pretty bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) wrapping, so there's no need to wrap anything separately — that alone won me over ^^

The owner talked about really making the walnut pastries by hand, and that affection for Buja Hodu came through the whole time listening — made me think there's just no way this could taste bad...

The price is reasonable for gifting, and more than anything, it's on a completely different level from the cheap walnut pastries sold at highway rest stops — one bite and you'll nod along in amazement at the taste and quality! While waiting for the order, there's a nice little table space set up right out front, so I sat there while it was being prepared ^^

What's in the 15-piece gift set and how it's wrapped

What I ordered was the 15-piece gift set with a nice balance of red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha, so I bought two sets happily! One is heading straight to Busan for my parents to try. The other set is our family's own snack! Since I was so curious about the contents and flavors and wanted to share them, I quickly opened one up near Hwangnidan-gil.

The gift set itself feels upscale, and there's a clear ribbon band with the Buja Hodu branding tucked inside, which really amps up the gift feel! Now let's take out the red bean, pea cream cheese, and matcha one by one, check the contents, and enjoy tasting each 😋

Red bean walnut pastry 🫘

This is Buja Hodu's most basic red bean walnut pastry, and what really surprised me was the amount of walnut inside.

My family loves walnut pastries so much that we buy them almost anywhere we find them, but I don't think there's anywhere else that packs in walnuts like Buja Hodu on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju! With such generous filling, this red bean walnut pastry was absolutely top-notch in flavor.

Matcha walnut pastry 🌿

Next up is the matcha walnut pastry, which honestly might be a love-it-or-hate-it flavor — my eldest kid and I, both matcha fans, ate it up happily, but the family members who don't like matcha said they'd just stick to the red bean one!

With the matcha aroma coming through fully in the filling, this is a matcha walnut pastry that today's matcha-obsessed younger crowd would definitely enjoy.

Pea cream cheese walnut pastry 🫛🧀

Buja Hodu's signature product, and the one everyone raved about — this pea cream cheese walnut pastry is something people of all ages would love.

Made generously with New Zealand cream cheese and plenty of pea filling, the first thing that hits you when you bite into the pea cream cheese one is the rich flavor of the cream cheese. This doesn't feel like a simple walnut pastry — it has a classy, upscale dessert vibe, and I think foreign tourists would love it too!

Is Buja Hodu a good souvenir from a Gyeongju trip?

Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju is packed with famous snacks and desserts, but Buja Hodu feels like it can absolutely earn its own share of love as a Hwangnidan-gil dessert stop! The pea cream cheese walnut pastry found at this Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil favorite feels like a distinctive treat that's only going to get more popular. This coming Chuseok, sitting around with family after dinner with coffee or tea alongside some Buja Hodu snacks sounds like it would make for an even more satisfying holiday.
