I went to Yeongjae Susan, a well-loved sashimi shop in Gaklak Market known for its gizzard shad sashimi and live shrimp — ! You can get a 3-hour free parking ticket, so there's plenty of time to park. After 3 hours it's ₩500 per 10 minutes!

How to find seafood gate 6 at Garakmol

Naver Maps says to exit Gaklak Market Station exit 2 and enter through gate 6 on the left, but I honestly couldn't find gate 6. It's easy to find if you keep Real Pub on your right as you walk in!

Just head toward where you can see the Susan Gate 6 sign!

Yeongjae Susan menu and prices

The place I picked up my order from today is C-10, Yeongjae Susan, which is apparently a partner store of Inuh-gyojuhaejeokdan (Mermaid Queen Pirates)! Under the store name were all sorts of sashimi types and prices posted up. The menu board seems to change with the season's catch. When I visited, gizzard shad was in season, so there were a lot of mixed platters with gizzard shad in them!

Those are the platters they have, and beyond the printed menu there's also single-item gizzard shad sashimi, live shrimp, snow crab, king crab, abalone — genuinely an insane variety of live seafood.

Why we skipped the live shrimp sashimi

I actually really wanted live shrimp sashimi, but since we'd already decided on gizzard shad that day, I reluctantly skipped it. When I bought only the gizzard shad sashimi, they asked if I didn't like live shrimp, and said live shrimp sashimi is really delicious — so disappointing ㅠㅠ I had it not long ago and I'm already craving it again...

King crab, snow crab, freshwater eel, conger eel, abalone, top shell, blue crab, sea cucumber, octopus — everything looked so good even while I was just waiting for my order. Sashimi delivery is a big thing these days, too. They deliver a lot and get so many orders that live fish come in more than 3 times a day. That kind of turnover really showed in how good the quality looked.

There are two more gizzard shad sashimi fanatics living at my house besides me, so even though I bought a mixed platter that included gizzard shad, I also bought a separate order of gizzard shad sashimi on its own!

How the sashimi was packed and how long it took

We got ours to go, and it took about 12 minutes from order to pickup! Instead of just a plastic bag, they packed everything in a really sturdy cold bag, which I loved. You can also buy the seafood and eat at a seasoning restaurant nearby for a separate table-setting fee, so if you want to eat right there, that's an option too.

There was also a big ice pack laid on top, and it had barely melted by the time we got home.

The free spicy fish stew kit at Yeongjae Susan

I asked for some fish stew add-ins too, and they threw in a huge sea bream head. No extra charge for the stew fixings — bean sprouts and stew seasoning included!

The sashimi came wrapped in plastic film inside a lidded plastic container, so there was no risk of spilling, which I really appreciated.

How the jeon-gwang-cham platter and mini gizzard shad sashimi tasted

Jeon-gwang-cham-hoe is a mixed platter of gizzard shad, large flounder, and large red sea bream. Even the small size turned out to be a decent amount — there were even flounder fins in there! The gizzard shad was really nice and firm and tasty, and the flounder and sea bream were chewy and delicious. So glad I bought this at Yeongjae Susan..!

We also got a separate mini gizzard shad sashimi, and even though the mini was only ₩20,000, it was genuinely packed full of gizzard shad — so good! Truly firm and springy through and through.....!!!!

Was it enough for four people? Final verdict

With just one small jeon-gwang-cham-hoe and one mini gizzard shad sashimi, four of us ate ourselves full on sashimi alone, with enough left over that we made fish stew the next day. The staff were all kind, the packing was near-perfect, and above all the sashimi was so delicious that next time I visit Gaklak Market I'll head straight back to Yeongjae Susan without a second thought! I recommend Yeongjae Susan as a top sashimi restaurant at Gaklak Market!
