Olympic Park sashimi picnic with Garak Market takeout: Yeongjae Susan
In short
Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi and seafood takeout shop at C-10 on the first floor of the Garak Mall market building in Songpa, Seoul. On a cool September afternoon, Yeongjae Susan packed a mixed sashimi platter with gizzard shad plus sea squirt, abalone and sea cucumber, and included plenty of vinegar-chili sauce and soy sauce, which made setting up a sashimi picnic at Olympic Park easy. For fall gizzard shad and thick flounder eaten outdoors, Yeongjae Susan's takeout is the answer.

This is the 94th restaurant I'm introducing 😋
September is already halfway through, and today I'm doing the trendy hoe-picnic (sashimi picnic) thing — buying packed sashimi from Garak Market and heading to Olympic Park. After checking out several shops in the Garak fish market, I picked Yeongjae Susan, because it won an excellence award in a Korean consumer industry evaluation for both sashimi and delivery, and because fall is supposedly the best season for gizzard shad 👍

How to find Yeongjae Susan at C-10 from Garak Market Station
Coming from Garak Market, take Exit 2, head into the fish market, keep going right, and C-10 shows up right next to the escalator!

The fish market is great, but sometimes the vendors trying to pull you in can feel a bit much... I did a full loop before finally finding Yeongjae Susan haha.

Ordering the gizzard shad mixed sashimi platter with sea squirt, abalone and sea cucumber
Yeongjae Susan has its sashimi platters clearly listed with prices, so you just pick the one you want! This time of year gizzard shad, raw shrimp and blue crab are all in season — exactly my favorites — and I wanted everything, but since it was for a picnic I went with the platter that included gizzard shad for easy eating.

I went around midday and they said most of the gizzard shad was already sold. The raw shrimp were so fresh they were jumping out of the tank — definitely coming back to buy some for home next time...! I also ordered a bit of seafood: sea squirt, abalone, sea cucumber! Seafood is sold by the kilo, and if you ask them to mix it at a reasonable price, they're happy to do it.
You can also use a 20% discount coupon when ordering through Naver.

It finally came out packed, and the packaging is so pretty! Looks like it'll stay cool all the way to Olympic Park. If you're looking for great gizzard shad at Garak Market, I recommend it!!

Setting up the sashimi picnic at Olympic Park: how did the gizzard shad and flounder taste?
Now off to Olympic Park with the packed sashimi~!!

Look at how the sashimi and seafood look! Packed so nicely it stayed cool, and they gave us plenty of vinegar-chili sauce and soy sauce too!

Setting up! Bringing sesame oil and instant rice was such a smart move ✨ The gizzard shad right now is absolutely amazing. Early fall gizzard shad has just the right amount of oiliness and nuttiness — exactly my type — and the bones weren't too tough, so dipping in vinegar-chili sauce was 👍👍 The flounder was so firm and fresh, sliced thick with really great texture too.
Chef Yoon Nam-no's recipe...? Apparently a piece of thick flounder on rice, dipped in vinegar-chili sauce, drizzled with sesame oil, is paradise lol. We were probably the only ones eating like this at Olympic Park.

What sea squirt and sea cucumber taste and feel like
You could see the freshness jumping right out of the photos. Especially the sea squirt...! Eating it felt like getting hit — so good it left me dazed 😂 And the sea cucumber...! Best texture of all. Not too crunchy, just the right thickness and chew that I love 😋

I won't forget that sea squirt we ate at Olympic Park.

Recommending this Garak fish market spot for an Olympic Park sashimi picnic!
Behind the story

Sashimi in the afternoon, yukhoe (raw beef tartare) in the evening — a day of eating everything raw. The yukhoe was fresh, and since it was a friend's acquaintance's shop, we got chadolbaegi (thin brisket) sashimi as a free service. Thank you! Recommending this yukhoe spot near Jamsilsaenae!
