Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch: a black pork restaurant in Andeok, Jeju

Of our roughly week-long trip around Jeju, the best place we stayed was Shinhwa World. It was great being able to play in the water with the kids, and it was spacious too. For dinner the kids wanted Jeju black pork, so we came to Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon, a black pork restaurant near Shinhwa World.

Honestly, I had no idea what the name Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon meant, but it turns out it's a wordplay — heukdon (black pork) and baekdon (white pork) written with si and myeon, mimicking an address format haha.

Since it's known for Jeju black pork, we ordered the black pork geungogi (thick-cut meat). What's great about this place is that they pre-grill the meat on charcoal briquettes — not at our table, but in a separate grilling area in the back, and they bring it out to us already pre-grilled.

Free oi dangmyeon muchim for a receipt review

At Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon, writing a receipt review gets you a free serving of oi dangmyeon muchim (cucumber and glass noodle salad). It's an item that's sold separately for ₩8,000, so definitely take part and try it.

We wrote our receipt review and got the oi dangmyeon muchim for free — it was sweet and tangy in a way that really got the appetite going, seriously a strong recommendation.

On the hot summer day we visited, this kind of fresh, tangy dish was exactly what I wanted — spicy, tangy, and sweet all at once, with crunchy cucumber to chew on and soft, tasty glass noodles. Personally, this was a favorite of mine.

Black pork geungogi after a day of water play with the kids

Our daughter was so worn out from playing in the water that the moment we sat down to eat, she konked right out. Sadly, that left just the two of us to order the black pork geungogi.

They showed us the black pork we ordered before taking it straight to the charcoal pre-grilling station. Since it's grilled in a separate spot rather than at our table, the meat smell didn't cling to us, which I loved, and we also didn't have to sit in front of hot flames on a summer day, which was great too.

Grilling it over charcoal briquettes also gave the meat a delicious smoky flavor. The excess fat was well rendered off and the juices were locked in, so the moment I took a bite I just blurted out how good it was.

They cut our daughter's portion into smaller pieces to make it easier for her to eat, and cut ours into bite-sized pieces too, which made it really convenient to eat.

Pork neck vs pork belly: which tasted better?

The black pork geungogi at Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon came with both neck and belly. The neck had a clean, light flavor while the belly was chewy and tender — personally, I liked the belly more.

Being black pork, it was even more savory and chewy. It was delicious even eaten plain, but wrapping it in different combinations with the side greens kept things interesting and meant we never got tired of it.

Finishing with kimchi jjigae and cheonhyehyang juice

To finish, we also ordered kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), which had a deep, meaty broth flavor — a real treat. It was packed with meat and the kimchi was nice and tangy, so I'd definitely recommend ordering it as a side.

We finished off with cheonhyehyang juice (a Jeju citrus juice) — I feel like a trip to Jeju isn't complete unless you end with cheonhyehyang or hallabong juice haha.

After playing hard in the water at Shinhwa World, we were starving, and it was such a relief to have a great black pork restaurant nearby. I'd recommend Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon to anyone looking for a black pork spot near Shinhwa World. As a side note, if you don't have a rental car and find it hard to get here, Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon apparently offers vehicle pickup, so it's worth calling ahead to arrange it.
