Smoke-seared black pork and group tables in Jungmun: Kkamang Dwaeji

If I had to pick the one thing you must eat on a trip to Jeju?? No question, it's black pork.

Today I'm introducing a Jungmun, Seogwipo spot I visited on a Jeju trip: Kkamang Dwaeji Jungmun Branch. Kkamang Dwaeji sells geungogi (pork sold and grilled in whole cuts) made from Grade 1 Jeju black pork aged 720 hours. The flavor and juiciness of the aged black pork, plus the variety of side dishes, totally won me over, so let's get into it.

Our lodging was close to Jungmun, so we went to Kkamang Dwaeji Jungmun Branch for black pork at lunch! The parking lot is huge, so it seemed like no problem even for a group visit.

Kkamang Dwaeji Jungmun Branch is a spot with both Blue Ribbon and Red Ribbon accolades hanging up!! We visited right after opening, but passing by in the evening it looked like you might need to join the Catch Table waitlist! There are a lot of tables inside, though, so turnover seems pretty good.

Inside Kkamang Dwaeji Jungmun Branch: long group tables and baby chairs

We sat at a round table for four. The place was clean and quite spacious, and with those long tables it looked great for group visits too! Sure enough, a family group came in while we were eating.

I couldn't help thinking that the baby chairs are probably the biggest reason so many families visit Kkamang Dwaeji!

Apparently if you leave a receipt review now, they'll give you a free doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) or kimchi jjigae! Don't miss out on that ?

How many side dishes come with the meal?

Before the charcoal came out, they set us up with side dishes first. Myeongi namul (wild garlic leaves), corn kernels, pickled radish, kimchi, bracken fern, sauces, pickled onions, shiitake mushroom sauce, lettuce, and more — a lot of it!!

If you run low on side dishes, sauces, small plates, tongs, or scissors, there's a self-serve bar, so just help yourself to as much as you need.

Now it's just a matter of grilling it properly over the charcoal. Since it comes pre-smoked, you can dig in pretty quickly at your table, hehehe.

Look at that samgyeopsal (pork belly) skin!! Watching the fat glisten as it cooks — that's the stuff!!

Who says there's no good food in Jungmun..? Kkamang Dwaeji's pre-smoked, aged black pork has this refined, tender flavor... T_T

The skin is chewy and crisp at once, the juices burst out — pure happiness.

Generous bibim guksu and a rich kimchi jjigae

We also ordered bibim guksu (spicy mixed noodles)... haha. But the noodles, lol, the portion was enormous. Honestly enough to fill up two people sharing.

You've got to put some meat on top of the noodles, right?! It was really tender and the smoky aroma spread through it, but it wasn't spicy and the sauce wasn't overpowering, so it went really well with the meat.

Kimchi jjigae! I was told to get kimchi jjigae instead of doenjang jjigae, so I switched it up T_T (I'd had doenjang jjigae the day before too). The kimchi jjigae had a really deep, intense seasoning, and the ingredients were generous too!!

Who should eat at Kkamang Dwaeji Jungmun Branch?

Living up to its reputation as a well-known Jungmun spot, Kkamang Dwaeji already has a ton of celebrity posters up!! Plus it's a Blue Ribbon-recognized restaurant. I was already sold before even eating, and honestly my happiness levels shot straight up the whole time I was eating.

If you come at lunchtime, there are reasonably priced set menus too, so it should be good value!! And beyond the taste, with the baby chairs and spacious tables, I'd also recommend it for family or group get-togethers!!
