Sokcho bakery individually wrapped potato bread gifts: Bultan Gamja

Traveling around Sokcho, you'll find plenty of famous foods like dakgangjeong (sweet fried chicken) or squid sundae, but you also end up looking for one thing to bring home. This time I stopped by Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, a bakery café that caught my curiosity just from its unusual name.

The pitch-black potato bread was already strange enough to look at, but once I actually tried it, even my mom enjoyed it — so I wanted to introduce this place to anyone looking for a Sokcho travel gift for family or friends!

Where is Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store, and what does it look like?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store is located at 34-20 Haksapyeong-gil, 1st floor, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do. The building's exterior was quite unique, with colorful characters painted all over it, making it easy to spot from a distance.

Rather than just a spot to grab bread and go, it had a fun atmosphere worth stopping by to look around during a Sokcho trip.

Near the entrance there was an orange directional sign reading 'Bultan Gamja Bread,' along with a sign that said 'Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Bakery & Café, made with squid ink' — so I could tell right away what kind of place it was.

Inside Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread: a roomier café than expected, with drinks

Once inside Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store, the space was bigger than I expected. There were large tables that could seat several people, so it looked comfortable for families too. The store also sells coffee, ades, and teas.

Sunlight came in through the large window in the back, and the red chairs and the table with a character illustration especially caught my eye, so I snapped a photo.

The muse-toy figures on display at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, a Sokcho bakery café favorite, has tiny character figures scattered everywhere in the store. These are called 'muse-toys' — ceramic art born from a collaboration between FC director Kim Hak-hyun and Pororo designer Choi Sang-hyun.

You can draw or write whatever you like on these blank-canvas-like ceramic figures, which seems like something fun to do with a partner, family, or kids.

Inside brick-shaped shelves sat figures each decorated differently, along with photos of celebrities who had visited. It was fun to look at how the same-shaped figures were customized so uniquely.

At the time of my visit, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread was sold in boxes of 4 for ₩10,000, with 10% off when buying 3 boxes! Of course, the first thing that catches your eye here is the signature menu item: the potato bread itself.

I noticed quite a few people buying multiple boxes at once rather than just one. Like us, some buy it as a travel snack, but it also seemed to be popular as a Sokcho travel gift.

When you open the box, each potato bread is individually wrapped. You don't have to eat them all at once, and it's easy to hand them out one by one, which makes it good for gifting too.

What the pitch-black squid-ink potato bread tastes like

Open the packaging on Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread and it really lives up to its name. It's shaped like a round potato, with a dark gray exterior that genuinely looks like a slightly burnt potato.

The packaging also says it's 'burnt potato bread made with squid ink,' and I found it interesting how they connected Sokcho's regional image with squid ink.

There are tiny dots dotting the surface, so from a distance it really does look like an actual potato, which was a fun detail.

Cutting it in half revealed a filling packed with yellow potato cream! The yellow potato filling, flavored with cream cheese and butter, was generously filled and contrasted clearly with the black exterior.

The outer dough was chewy, and the filling inside had a gentle blend of potato and cream cheese flavor that was savory. Most of all, it stuck with me because my mom enjoyed it too.

How do you store Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread?

Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread contains no synthetic additives at all, so it's made and sold same-day as a rule. Room temperature storage is fine for about a day, but if you're saving it for later, freezing is recommended. Once thawed at room temperature, heating it in the microwave for 20 seconds makes it even more delicious to eat :D

Sokcho jjondeugi and oranda sold at the same counter

Around the counter at Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread, there were other snacks besides the potato bread — Sokcho jjondeugi (chewy rice snack), a 12-pack for ₩10,000, and oranda for ₩10,000.

I also tried the Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi. As the name suggests, it's a jjondeugi with a squid scent! I gave some to family after the trip, and my grandmother enjoyed it :) Personally, I think jjondeugi tastes best grilled over fire!?

Why Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread works as a travel gift for family

Personally, Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread was a good pick to bring back as a Sokcho travel gift. Unlike typical potato bread, the black visual made with squid ink is memorable, and being individually wrapped made it easy to share with family or friends one at a time.

Since my mom enjoyed it too, I thought it would make a good snack to bring to parents or family. And seeing other customers at the store buying several boxes at once, it seems I'm not the only one who thought of it as a gift item.
