Sokcho bakery potato bread that's still chewy next day: Bultan Gamja

After a Gangwon-do trip, we were heading back to Seoul and wanted something to snack on. We'd already had plenty of coffee and bread, so I was wondering if there was anything simple to grab — and that's when I found Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread!

There's a main store, a No. 1 branch, and a No. 2 branch, but we went to the main store since it was closest!

Hours are Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Kind of unexpected, haha! I thought it would open earlier and close later!

The container-style exterior on Haksapyeong-gil

When you first see the exterior, you might wonder, 'Is this really it?' haha. It has this huge container-box feel, kind of like a vintage funky shop. Definitely catches your eye!

The weather was cloudy that day, with rain coming and going. The parking lot was pretty large too, though I didn't manage to photograph all of it! You probably don't need to worry about parking here.

Inside Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread: seating, microwave, and the muse-toy painting activity

The inside of Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store was bigger than I expected. Clean, unassuming interior! It probably gets more takeout traffic, but it's still a comfortable size to sit and stay. Since a lot of families seem to come here, there were tables for 4, 6, and even 8 people. (There seemed to be a second floor too, but it wasn't open yet when we visited.)

Straws, tissues, and syrup are all set up, and there's even a microwave! (Warming up the potato bread would probably make it even tastier!)

There was also a muse-toy coloring activity. It seemed like a nice little setup for kids to draw and play indoors when they tag along on a trip.

There was a wall panel about the health benefits of potato and squid ink — sounds great, right? haha. There's a joke that you'd need to eat like a ton of food to actually feel any health benefits, but hey, if it's good for you and tastes good too, what's not to like~ haha.

What we ordered: potato bread 4-pack and 10 squid-flavored jjondeugi

At Sokcho Bultan Gamja Bread Main Store, we bought a 4-pack of Sokcho Bultan potato bread (₩10,000) and 10 pieces of Sokcho squid-flavored jjondeugi (₩10,000), ₩20,000 total.

Ta-da! They packaged everything so nicely. We planned to eat it as a snack on the way back to Seoul, but it would also make a good gift!

Let's dig in, haha. I loved that everything was individually packaged. Not just plain clear OPP plastic, so it felt even more hygienic.

How does Sokcho Bultan potato bread taste?

Honestly, at first I didn't think it was that sweet or salty, so I said the potato bread from Mega Coffee was better (sorry, haha), but my best friend, who loves the classic version, said this was the best potato bread she'd ever had! I was on the fence too, but after eating another one and chewing on it a while, I got hooked on that sweet-salty flavor that comes from the potato itself, not some MSG-loaded version..! Haha.

Correction! I also think this is the best one!! Haha.

How does the squid-flavored jjondeugi taste?

And then the squid jjondeugi. Right when you open it, there's a strong squid smell, but the actual jjondeugi wasn't as intense as I expected! And honestly, that made it even better.

We each meant to just have one piece, but somehow by the time we got to Seoul, we'd nearly finished the whole batch, haha.

Final verdict: the potato bread tasted the same the next day

If you're tired of overly sweet desserts, want a snack with real Gangwon-do character, or need a gift after a Gangwon trip, I highly recommend this!! I saved one loaf and ate it the next day, and it tasted exactly the same as the day we bought it, with zero difference!
