Jeju café with nurungji einspänner and flower tea: Sigan-eul Damda

Whenever I travel to eastern Jeju, I always end up looking for a quiet, special place to rest.

This time, wanting some peaceful downtime near the beautiful sea, I headed to Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa — Sehwa-ri/Pyeongdae-ri café, Gujwa-eup, a well-known café near Sehwa in Jeju.

It's tucked in such a peaceful village alley that just driving in already made me feel quietly calm.

The water garden and wisteria flower interior: the café's best photo spot

The café's exterior is built in a modern, clean concrete style, with a wide lawn and a very long reflection pool stretched out in front, which made a striking first impression.

The gentle sound of flowing water, combined with the surrounding forest and palm trees, made it feel like stepping into a fortress hidden in the woods.

Stepping inside, the ceiling filled with purple wisteria blossoms immediately caught my eye.

A faint, pleasant aroma drifted through the air, adding to the healing mood.

What to order: Nurung Einspänner, Royal Crystal Blossom tea and carrot ddeora cake

After browsing the café's signature menu, I ordered the nurungji-topped espresso, the Royal Crystal Blossom, and the carrot ddeora cake.

I sat at a photo-zone seat with a great view of the outdoor reflection pool while waiting for my drinks — thanks to the natural light and blue water, pretty much anywhere you shoot turns out great.

The nurungji drink had a thick, smooth layer of nutty nurungji (scorched rice) cream over a strong espresso base, and the sweet, toasty flavors blended beautifully.

The Royal Crystal Blossom is a charming tea-tasting menu that comes with four house-made cordials — rose, hibiscus, marigold, and green tangerine — along with sparkling water infused with fruit and herbs.

You pour the sparkling water in to taste, and the cool, refreshing fizz mixed with the floral notes cleaned the palate beautifully.

The carrot ddeora cake is an unusual rice dessert with warm, chewy baekseolgi (white steamed rice cake) layered with house-made carrot jam and soft whipped cream.

Scooping it up with a spoon, the chewiness of the rice cake and the not-too-sweet carrot jam came together perfectly — light on the stomach and genuinely delicious.

Free paper boats and wish candles at Sigan-eul Damda Gujwa

Inside the café, colorful paper and a free paper boat activity are set up for visitors to float on the reflection pool.

I went back to my childhood self and folded a paper boat, gently setting it down on the water — just watching it drift along gave me a small but real sense of joy.

Holding the camera low near the pillar right in front of the reflection pool let me capture a striking outdoor shot with the scenery reflected on the water's surface.

It was a space where I could step away from the crowds of famous tourist sites and enjoy a leisurely cup of tea while listening to quiet water sounds and sensory music.

Between the special desserts made with Jeju's own Gujwa carrots and the tea-culture-inspired drink lineup, I was convinced there's no better place to visit with parents or a partner.

On my next trip to eastern Jeju, I'm definitely planning to come back for this calm atmosphere and the distinctive drinks.
