Jongno theater date night, third row Saturday 6pm: Suspicious PT Shop

Lately, dates with my husband have started to follow a pretty fixed pattern — eat, then go to a cafe. So this time I wanted to try something a little different, and we went to see a play in Daehangno. The show we picked was Suspicious PT Shop!

We originally planned to watch the Saturday 3pm show and have dinner afterward, but the 3pm slot sold out faster than expected. So we ended up booking the Saturday 6pm show instead. The performance runs about 80 minutes.

Easy to get to — just 5 minutes from Hyehwa Station

It's about a 4-minute walk from Hyehwa Station, so it wasn't hard to find. Daehangno has so many theaters that I wasn't sure where to go at first, but since this one is fairly close to the station, we found it quickly.

The current show schedule is Mon/Thu/Fri at 7pm, Saturday at 3pm and 6pm, and Sunday at 3pm (with a 6pm slot on alternating weeks).

You get why it's called Suspicious PT Shop the moment you walk in

Once inside, the space was split into two distinct vibes. One side was set up like a hair salon — turns out this show is actually a follow-up to 'Suspicious Hair Salon.'

And the other side, true to the title, was decked out like a PT (personal training) gym.

There was a separate area to wait in before the show, with water, tea, and coffee available, so it was nice to relax for a bit beforehand. The stage itself was styled to look like an actual PT gym, and since we sat in the third row, we could see the actors' expressions and movements up close, which made it feel even more real. The seats were movie-theater style too, so they were more comfortable than I expected.

Audience participation starts before the show even begins

What was unusual about this play was that an actor comes out and starts talking to the audience, asking questions, before the show officially starts. I thought it was just a casual warm-up bit, but it turned out to tie directly into the actual story later on. So if you pay attention and participate from the start, you'll probably enjoy the show even more.

The actor also gives out gifts to audience members, and they were surprisingly nice, haha. We're both pretty shy so we didn't participate, but if you're into that kind of thing, go ahead and get involved.

A vibe that's clearly different from a typical Daehangno play

It was billed beforehand as a 'high-heat play,' so I had some idea of what to expect going in, and the atmosphere was definitely different from a normal play. That said, it's not overly intense from the start — think of it more as scenes and a mood geared toward adult audiences.

Personally, I think this show suits couples who are fairly comfortable with each other, or married couples, more than couples who just started dating or are still in the early 'seeing each other' stage. My husband and I are currently preparing for our wedding, so we laughed our way through it, though there were still a few slightly awkward moments here and there, haha.

So I'd actually recommend it more for couples who've been together a while and want to try something new for a date.

Recommended if you're tired of the dinner-and-cafe date routine

Overall, it was a good choice when we wanted a different kind of date in Daehangno. In particular, the fact that the actors interact with the audience before the show even starts made it feel more special than a typical play where you just sit and watch.

We'd planned to watch the 3pm Saturday show and have dinner after, so it was a bit of a letdown that it sold out and we had to switch to the 6pm show — but having a late dinner after the show turned out to be nice too.

If you've been stuck in a loop of dinner-then-cafe dates, it might be worth throwing in a show like this once in a while. I'd especially recommend it for couples about to get married like us, or long-term couples and married pairs. Next time, I want to find another Daehangno play and try a different kind of date again.
