Why I picked dak hanmari for lunch in Jongno 5-ga
I had somewhere to be in Jongno 5-ga and was looking for lunch nearby when I ended up at Sunhuine Bindaetteok Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun. There are so many good restaurants in Jongno that I had trouble deciding, but that day I wanted something warm and filling, so I went with the nostalgic classic — dak hanmari (whole chicken soup)!

Near Dongdaemun Market there's an entire alley dedicated to dak hanmari restaurants — that's how many good ones there are. Among them, Sunhuine, famous for bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) and yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), also serves dak hanmari, so I finally checked out a place I'd been curious about for a while! You know Sunhuine's yukhoe from Gwangjang Market? Turns out it's the same company.

Two floors — good for group gatherings?
The restaurant operates on both the 1st and 2nd floors, so there were really a lot of tables. With seating upstairs too, it's perfect for groups looking for a Dongdaemun Market restaurant or a meeting spot in Jongno. The place is big enough to seat plenty of people!

We ordered the signature dish: dak hanmari
That day we ordered the signature menu item, of course — dak hanmari. The weather had turned cool and autumn-like, with summer's heat finally fading, so as the season changed I wanted something hot to warm up the body.

I did glance at the yukhoe and bindaetteok that Sunhuine is known for, but since the whole reason I came was dak hanmari, I picked it without hesitation!

Dak hanmari is one of those dishes I crave from time to time, but weirdly there aren't many good places for it in my neighborhood. So I ended up coming all the way out to find a good dak hanmari spot in Dongdaemun — and that day was this day.

Side dishes: kimchi, garlic, vegetables
The side dishes come out very simple, since a whole pot of dak hanmari is about to arrive!
- Kimchi
- Garlic
- Vegetables
Personally, kimchi is take-it-or-leave-it for me, but garlic and vegetables are best mixed generously into the special sauce and used to dip the chicken — that's the real way to enjoy it!

Chicken cut tableside, ready in just 5–10 more minutes
A big pot arrives, generously packed with dak hanmari, and I loved that they cut it into bite-sized pieces right there at the table! Since it's already pre-simmered, it only needs another 5 to 10 minutes of boiling before you can dig in — a real plus!

So the pieces of dak hanmari chicken they cut for us go straight into the pot, which is placed over the burner at the table.

The pale, rich broth is simmered down with mushrooms, scallions and other vegetables — total body-warming food, I'm telling you.
How to make the dak hanmari sauce
Dak hanmari sauce

The real point of dak hanmari is the sauce, right? You mix the seasonings set out on the table to your taste and eat them with the chicken! There's a thick dadegi (chili paste) seasoning — scoop some out, mix it with the garlic and vegetables, drizzle on the soy-based sauce, and that's it!

That incredible dak hanmari sauce... once you have it, you honestly can't stop eating. Dip the chicken in, take a bite, sip the broth — ahh, it really feels like all the fatigue drains out of your whole body.
The best place on Dongdaemun's Dak Hanmari Alley? Hands down, Sunhuine Dak Hanmari Dongdaemun. First off, the size of the chicken was massive. We promised to come back again — you've got to eat this once a season to say you've properly restored your body.

₩33,000 for two — how much food do you get?
The dak hanmari just kept going and going! Even though we only ordered the 33,000-won-for-two set, it was so generous that we finished full without even adding rice or noodles. I usually always finish with rice, turned into a porridge-like ending, but this time I was already too full!
And you know this part too, right? The rice cake, soaked soft in the dak hanmari broth! Ah, that's a real treat too — you have to eat it.

A proper dak hanmari ending — ☆♪ I'd happily eat this dripping with sweat even in the middle of summer. It's just turned autumn so I craved something hot, but honestly Dongdaemun's Dak Hanmari Alley deserves a visit in every season ♡
