Pasta restaurant in Gongneung-dong, Seoul: bisque pasta at LA RUELLE
In short
LA RUELLE is a French restaurant on the second floor of a white building down an alley off the Gyeongchunseon Forest Trail in Gongneung-dong, Seoul. On a weeknight visit after work with a friend, the order was bisque pasta at 18,000 won, forestière mushroom risotto at 18,000 won and boeuf bourguignon at 33,000 won, and the bright bisque sauce clinging to the linguine plus bourguignon beef that crumbled at the touch of a knife were the standouts. With tables for 2, 4 and 6, LA RUELLE works equally well for first dates, dates and small group dinners.

Today I'm bringing you a review of LA RUELLE, a French restaurant hidden in an alley off the Gyeongchunseon Forest Trail in Gongneung-dong >_< Apparently "la ruelle" means "alley" in French, and it really is on the 2nd floor of a white building tucked between alleys — the name fit perfectly haha. I went after work on a weekday with a friend, and I was so satisfied with both the vibe and the food that I'm sharing it here ✨

I'd recommend booking through Naver Reservation before you go! The atmosphere is nice enough that walk-ins should be fine too, but I'd still suggest reserving ahead 😌
What is LA RUELLE, the French restaurant on the Gongneung Gyeongchunseon Forest Trail, like inside?
The moment I stepped through the door at LA RUELLE, it felt like I'd been transported to an alley in Paris! The floor is done up to look exactly like European stone paving. The tables and chairs have a terrace feel, topped with flower arrangements, so it was great for photos too 📸 The atmosphere is amazing, isn't it??

There's a good range of seating too, from tables for two up to four and six, so it seemed like it would suit blind dates, regular dates, and group gatherings equally well! The lighting was soft, making it easy to talk 💛

There's an open window so you can watch the chef cooking! There's also a separate wine storage space (Cave à Vin) inside, which doubled as a really pretty interior accent haha. The chef's Le Cordon Bleu certificate is hung up too, which made me trust the place even more...🤍

LA RUELLE menu and prices
As a proper French restaurant, LA RUELLE has a wide range of pasta and risotto dishes. There are plenty of good sides to go with them, and several kinds of wine by the glass or bottle, and the chef even offered recommendations haha!

The 🏆 marks are the restaurant's signature dishes haha. From onion soup to tartare to boeuf bourguignon — you can enjoy French food right here in Gongneung..✨

Honest review: a weeknight dinner at LA RUELLE in Gongneung-dong
Of these, we ordered three: bisque pasta, forestière mushroom risotto, and boeuf bourguignon. Once you order, they bring out an appetizer first, which was a light way to whet the appetite 🤍.🤍 The atmosphere really is great — this would be perfect for a blind date...🫧

🦐 Bisque pasta, 18,000 won
This was seriously a flavor I've never had anywhere else...! There's a hint of lemony brightness to it, and the cream isn't heavy but just the right thickness, so the distinctive shellfish-bisque flavor comes through without any fishiness and blends in perfectly??

The sauce clings to the linguine like this, and it's got that rich bisque body plus a slightly bright tang, so it was really delicious 🥹
The shrimp weren't the cocktail-shrimp kind either — they were nice and plump, so I was very satisfied 🫠 If you like bisque or cream pastas, I really recommend this one!!!

🍄 Forestière mushroom risotto, 18,000 won
The rice was cooked exactly right!!! The base is a soft cream-and-cheese blend loaded with mushrooms, and with every bite a subtle truffle aroma drifts up, which I loved 🖤

Anyone who likes mushrooms is guaranteed to love this... A moist cream risotto packed with king oyster, oyster, and button mushrooms — this flavor is a crowd-pleaser!

🍗 Boeuf bourguignon, 33,000 won

Apparently they make the vegetable stock here in-house from scratch... and maybe that's why the sauce tasted exactly like the boeuf bourguignon I once had in France?!?
The meat was so tender it practically crumbled just from touching it with a knife — I really enjoyed it. It pulls apart along the grain and just melts in your mouth..🥹 Pairing it with the fries served alongside is an absolutely perfect match!!
Who is LA RUELLE best for?
- Anyone looking for a blind-date or anniversary dinner spot
- Anyone looking for a restaurant good for conversation near Gongneung / Taereung Ipgu Station
- Anyone who loves French cooking
- Anyone who loves bisque pasta
- Anyone looking for a quiet restaurant that can seat groups of 2 to 6
If you've been looking for a good pasta spot around Gongneung-dong or Gongni-dan-gil, I highly recommend LA RUELLE! I want to go back and try other menu items next time haha 🤍
