Monjayaki set for two on a weekday lunch in Songdo: Jojo Triple Street

In short

Jojo Triple Street Branch is a teppan (iron griddle) Japanese restaurant on Triple Street in Songdo, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, and one of the few places in Korea serving monjayaki. On a weekday visit at 1pm with her mother, the writer ordered the monjayaki set for two, 39,500 won, which comes with cod roe monjayaki, karai yakisoba and waterfall potato, and a staff member spread the batter on the griddle, added cheese and set a 5-minute timer. With cod roe, cheese and cabbage and a lightly crisped bottom that is fun to scoop straight off the griddle, Jojo is worth a stop if you are curious about monjayaki in Songdo.

Waterfall potato decorated to look like a snowman

Oh~ while I was busy taking photos, my mom said it looked like a snowman, so she stuck on eyes and turned it into one lol

On top of the soft potato salad sits one soft-boiled egg, and a scattering of crispy flakes, so eating it together gives it a texture that's never boring

Karai yakisoba

Karai yakisoba served on the griddle

True to its name, this karai (spicy) yakisoba has a mild kick

Yakisoba noodles with shrimp

The noodles are chewy and full of umami, with plump shrimp mixed in — slightly spicy but not overwhelming, so it's easy for anyone to enjoy

Cod roe monjayaki: what monjayaki is and how to eat it

Cod roe monjayaki ingredients before cooking

And here it is — today's main dish, cod roe monjayaki. Monjayaki is a Japanese griddle dish made from a thin batter mixing flour, cabbage, meat, seafood, and other ingredients. It's eaten by scooping up small bites with a little spatula.

Once the griddle heats up, the staff pours the batter on and starts mixing — chap chap chap

A dazzling spatula dance unfolds on the griddle

Cod roe monjayaki topped with cheese on the griddle

After spreading it out wide, they shower it with cheese and set a 5-minute timer, and the waiting begins. Meanwhile, you can munch on the karai yakisoba, haha. The finished look isn't much to brag about, but it makes you imagine the taste. The square cubes are mochi — flip them once halfway through so they cook properly and get nice and chewy

Scooping up cod roe monjayaki with a small spatula

After 5 minutes~ just scoop up the cod roe monjayaki with the small spatula where the bottom has browned nicely. Easy, right~ It's a savory, unfussy dish to eat, and the combination of cod roe, savory cheese, and sweet cabbage is addictive — there's real fun in scooping it up. It tastes even better once the bottom is slightly crisped, so I'd recommend waiting for that before you dig in.

Jojo Songdo's monjayaki — something you can enjoy right here in Songdo. It's also known for its yakisoba and cod roe gyoza, so I'd recommend trying a variety of dishes. And as a bonus, you get to watch the friendly staff put on their dazzling spatula dance.
