Quiet Suwon bar for daedoritang dates: Ryu-eun

There are so many pretty cafés and great restaurants in Haenggung-dong these days, right? This time, while on a Haenggung-dong date with my boyfriend, we found a spot where we could enjoy tasty Korean dishes with drinks in a quiet atmosphere, so I wanted to introduce it to you.

It is Ryu-eun, a bar in Haenggung-dong. Rather than having the loud, bustling feel of a pocha (Korean tent bar), it is a place where you can enjoy a meal and drinks in a cozy, atmospheric setting, so it was also nice for a date.

It is tucked into an alley in Haenggung-dong, so it felt a little calmer than the busy main street. I heard it is a duplex-style space using both the first and second floors.

It appears there is no dedicated parking lot, so if you are driving, it is easiest to use a nearby public or paid parking lot. Personally, parking in Haenggung-dong is not particularly easy on weekends, so I recommend public transportation for a date!

Check the hours before visiting

Based on the most recent information I could find, Ryu-eun is regularly closed on Mondays; hours are 17:00–23:30 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday; 17:00–01:00 Friday; and 16:00–01:00 Saturday. Older hours still vary a little across online reviews, though, so I recommend checking Naver Place or contacting the bar on the day of your visit.

My boyfriend and I visited in the evening, and I liked how calm the atmosphere was as soon as we entered. Rather than a typical pojangmacha-style drinking spot, Ryu-eun felt more like somewhere between fusion Korean dining and a bar. It is divided between the first and second floors and also has outdoor seating, which looked lovely for drinks on the terrace on a nice day.

The second floor especially has large windows, so it feels less closed in, and I heard the soft lighting makes the evening atmosphere even nicer.

It had a nice atmosphere for chatting with each other during a date, so I think it would suit anyone looking for a Haenggung-dong date bar.

Ordering Korean beef daedoritang and two drinks

My boyfriend and I ordered Korean beef daedoritang for ₩25,000, a bokbunja highball for ₩13,000, and fortified wine for ₩11,000, for a total of ₩49,000.

I even saved a proof shot of our order 📸 The two of us had one main dish with drinks, and it was just the right combination for dinner and a drink.

Our main dish at Ryu-eun was Korean beef daedoritang! The name alone makes you curious, doesn’t it? Haha. Daedoritang is a dish that lets you enjoy daechang (beef large intestine) and chicken together, and the pot was packed with ingredients, making it look seriously appetizing from the start.

After ordering, you cook it bubbling away at the table, and as it came to a boil, the aroma of the broth rose up—it was exactly the kind of dish that goes well with drinks. The daechang in particular gave it a much richer, nuttier flavor than an ordinary dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken stew).

Along with the daechang and chicken, it had green onions, assorted vegetables, mushrooms, and more, so it was quite generous! I tried a spoonful of broth first, then let it cook a little longer before eating the ingredients, and the broth seemed to deepen as time went on.

Above all, it is great with drinks because the broth has a little kick along with the distinctive nutty richness of daechang. Have a sip, take a spoonful of broth, and you just keep reaching for more. My boyfriend and I kept eating it while saying, “This is really good with drinks!” 😂

Bokbunja highball, ₩13,000

For drinks, we ordered a bokbunja highball. It has bokbunja’s distinctive sweetness, making it a relatively easy style to enjoy even for people who are not great with strong alcohol!

Its color was pretty too, so putting it beside the food when taking photos really brought the table to life. Ryu-eun itself offers everything from traditional Korean liquor to highballs and a variety of other drinks, so being able to choose according to your taste is another advantage.

Fortified wine, ₩11,000

And then there was the fortified wine for ₩11,000, which we ordered out of curiosity. Pairing wine with Korean drinking dishes felt a little unusual, but it worked better than expected. It had a different feel from the highball alongside a seasoned dish like daedoritang! If you usually only drink soju or beer, I recommend trying a different kind of drink like this.

Is it a good bar for talking on a date?

Personally, what I liked most about Ryu-eun was the combination of atmosphere and food. There are so many pretty bars in Haenggung-dong, but once you go in, some have loud music or tables packed tightly together, making it hard to talk on a date, you know? Ryu-eun, though, had a relatively cozy, calm atmosphere, so it was nice to sit with my boyfriend, eat something delicious, and talk.

It would be especially nice when you are on a Haenggung-dong date and feel that just going to a café is not quite enough, and you want a drink somewhere atmospheric in the evening. It felt well suited to lots of occasions: dates, gatherings with friends, family meetups, or casual drinks!

If you want a quiet drink in Haenggung-dong

Ryu-eun seems especially suited to anyone who would rather spend a more relaxed time in an alley than at the noisy bars on Haenggung-dong’s main street. With Korean dishes at its core alongside highballs, wine, traditional Korean liquor, and other drinks, it is a place I particularly want to recommend to anyone thinking, “I want dinner and drinks, but I don’t want somewhere too loud!” We visited for dinner and drinks during our Haenggung-dong date, and it was lovely to spend time talking comfortably.

If I visit again, I would like to try the gamtae cream pasta or Korean beef yukhoe tartare that we missed this time!
