Gwangju hanjeongsik restaurant with soy marinated crab set: Bomseol
In short
Bomseol is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant run by a certified Korean cuisine master, sitting in front of Gyeongan Stream in Chowol-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. Two diners ordered the master's soy marinated crab set (25,000 won) and the master's barley gulbi set (27,000 won), refilling freshly cooked stone-pot rice and side dishes from the self-bar, and the crab was packed with meat without being overly salty. Bomseol makes for a tidy, generous meal worth returning to with parents.

A tidy full-table meal from a certified Korean cuisine master, complete with hot-pot rice and self-bar refills — Bomseol hanjeongsik in Chowol, Gwangju.
Bomseol is a hanjeongsik restaurant my partner and I visited as a Gwangju, Gyeonggi eatery. I heard it belongs to a certified master of Korean cuisine, and sure enough, everything from the freshly cooked hot-pot rice to each side dish came out beautifully arranged — I found myself thinking I should bring my parents next time. Gyeongan Stream flows right in front, so the view outside was peaceful, and the whole vibe felt like a little escape from the city :)

Bomseol's exterior by Gyeongan Stream and the waiting area
There's parking right below the restaurant, which made driving there convenient. And right in front, Gyeongan Stream comes into full view — looking at the green grass and flowing water actually felt like being on a little drive, haha.

After parking, the stairway up to the restaurant had a nice atmosphere, so I took a photo ;) At the top, a cozy, countryside-style building and entrance appear, with a Korean Cuisine Master mark and a description of the restaurant posted up, which got me a little excited about the food.

There's a small waiting area near the entrance where you can sit while you wait, and the restrooms are in the same space, which was convenient.

Inside Bomseol: atmosphere and table seating
Stepping inside Bomseol, the first thing that caught my eye was the wall covered in Korean Cuisine Master certifications and award records. It looked like the famous hanbok designer Park Sul-nyeo had even visited, judging from a handwritten note left on the wall, haha.

The wood-toned interior felt comfortable yet warm. The tables were spaced generously and the seating was ample, making it a good spot for family meals or group gatherings.
Bomseol menu and prices: can one person order a set?

The menu ranges from the basic Bomseol table set to soy crab, barley gulbi, cockle salad, stir-fried pork, and grilled mackerel — a wide variety of Korean dishes. The basic Bomseol set requires two or more people, but the individual set menus can be ordered for one, so it's fine to visit solo too. We ordered the restaurant's signature dishes: the Master's Soy Crab Set (₩25,000) and the Master's Barley Gulbi Set (₩27,000), one of each :)
Self-bar banchan refills and how the soy marinated crab and barley gulbi taste

Here are the neatly arranged side dishes, including the barley gulbi and soy crab we ordered.

Every single side dish tasted good in this lineup. The basic side dishes, plus rice and soup, could all be freely refilled at the self-bar,

so it was great being able to help yourself to as much as you wanted 👍

The freshly made hot-pot rice even had water added ahead of time to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea).
I tried the soy crab first — it wasn't overpowering, and the crab meat was quite generous, so eating it with rice made it an absolute rice thief 😋 I loved that the soy sauce seasoning wasn't too salty.

The master's barley gulbi (dried and seasoned croaker) came with green tea. The flesh was already deboned and ready to eat, so no extra prep needed.
Dipped in gochujang, it tasted almost like gochujang-seasoned gulbi, haha. The barley gulbi had a really nice savory flavor, so I also spooned some over the sungnyung 😋

The rice, main dishes, and side dishes were all tasty, making it a successful meal.

By the counter on the way out, there's a small side-dish sales corner where you can buy simple banchan and barley gulbi. Since the master's barley gulbi had no fishy taste and tasted great, it seemed like something worth enjoying at home too.
The dessert corner and rest lounge after the meal

Across from the entrance, there's a simple dessert corner and rest area where you can relax after your meal, with self-serve coffee and puffed rice snacks. There are tables and chairs too, making it a nice space to unwind for a bit after eating.
Why Bomseol is a good place to bring your parents

This is Bomseol hanjeongsik, where my partner and I went for lunch. True to being run by a certified Korean cuisine master, the freshly cooked hot-pot rice and neatly arranged side dishes made it a great Gwangju Chowol spot for a family meal with parents too. The relaxing view of Gyeongan Stream right in front made it feel like a little drive out of the city. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good hanjeongsik restaurant in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, or a dining spot for a drive just outside Seoul :)
