Suwon Station pork belly restaurant with egg custard: Taejang Sikdang

In short

Taejang Sikdang Suwon Station Branch is a retro pork belly restaurant on the second floor near the Rodeo street exit of Suwon Station in Gyeonggi. The order was two servings of 4mm frozen pork belly (180g, 11,000 won), two servings of 6mm fresh pork belly (180g, 14,000 won), steamed egg custard and the house Taejang fried rice, which arrives cooked in the kitchen instead of on the grill. Tasting the two thicknesses side by side showed clearly different textures, and the kitchen-cooked fried rice made the finish easy.

I was looking for a place to eat meat near Suwon Station and ended up at Taejang Sikdang Suwon Station Branch. That day I wanted to try both frozen and fresh pork belly, so I ordered two servings of 4mm frozen pork belly and two servings of 6mm fresh pork belly.

It felt like a waste to just eat meat, so I ordered egg custard and fried rice on top — and honestly ended up way fuller than I expected. Overall it was a really tasty meal.

Taejang Sikdang Suwon Station Branch was easy to find from the Suwon Station Rodeo Street area. I was searching for a BBQ spot near Suwon Station and the location wasn't hard to track down at all — once I actually visited, I understood why it keeps showing up when you search for the best pork belly near Suwon Station.

Retro interior and group tables at Taejang Sikdang

Interior decorated with retro props

The retro vibe caught my eye the moment I walked in. There were old-school props and decor scattered around the place, so it was fun just to look around instead of only focusing on the food.

Hall with wide tables and group seating

The tables were pretty spacious and there was room for larger groups too, so it seemed like a good spot for meals with friends or work dinners. It's a BBQ restaurant, but the atmosphere is far from ordinary, which made it fun to photograph too.

I ordered two servings of 4mm frozen pork belly and two servings of 6mm fresh pork belly. The frozen pork belly was ₩11,000 for 180g, and the 6mm fresh pork belly was ₩14,000 for 180g.

On top of that I also ordered egg custard and the Taejang fried rice.

Side dishes of kimchi, bean sprouts, bracken, and scallion salad

Sides like kimchi, bean sprouts, bracken, and scallion salad came out by default to eat with the meat, so there were plenty of combinations to try.

4mm frozen vs 6mm fresh pork belly: how they taste

I grilled the frozen pork belly first — being thin, it cooked fast. Eating the crispy bits together with the juicier parts gave a nice texture, and grilling it alongside the kimchi and bean sprouts made it really good.

Dipping the meat into the special egg-yolk sauce worked better than I expected. It gave a savory, salty flavor different from just dipping in salt, so I kept going back to the sauce in between bites.

The 6mm fresh pork belly was noticeably thicker than the frozen version, so it had more chew to it. With that thickness came more juiciness, and switching back and forth between the two made it more fun since the same cut felt so different.

The egg custard was nice to eat alongside the meat midway through, and finishing with the fried rice rounded off the meal properly.

What stood out most was that the fried rice wasn't fried on the grill plate — it came out already cooked from the kitchen, which made it much easier to eat!!

Having tried both the frozen and fresh pork belly, I enjoyed each for its own distinct charm.
