Dongjak Korean BBQ with rich gopchang: Bareun Hwangso Gopchang
In short
Bareun Hwangso Gopchang is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Dongjak, Seoul, serving Korean beef gopchang and assorted offal. On a nearly full Monday night, I loved the rich gopchang, complimentary fish cake soup, and mayo-loaded fried rice. Verdict: a must-try for tender, savory gopchang in Dongjak.

Wow, even though we arrived around 8:30 on a Monday night, every table but one was full!!! It must be a neighborhood favorite. I was imagining a quiet restaurant because it was Monday, so the crowd surprised me—and got me even more excited!!

So many soju bottle caps on the wall hahaha. There was even a heart drawn with red caps!!!!! Hahaha, I loved the proper old-school restaurant vibe. They were running an event where you get one alcoholic drink or one side dish for taking part in the Naver receipt-review event! Korean beef ^.^ Of course it’s domestic!! Looks delicious♡
Ordering a Mix of Assorted and Korean Beef Gopchang

Assorted gopchang ₩24,000 Korean beef gopchang ₩25,000 We tried ordering them mixed together!! Whenever I order an assorted platter, I always feel like there isn’t enough gopchang, so I wanted to focus on gopchang!
The owner asked whether we ate cheonyeop (raw honeycomb tripe) and brought us some! A complimentary dish you get at a fresh gopchang place ^.^ I don’t usually eat it, but Bbak-su said it was good, so I tried it once. It was more edible than it looked.

Pickled perilla leaves to cut through the richness ^.^ Hahaha, the wet wipes are ridiculously cute. The older I get, the more I realize health is everything. Stay super strong!!!!!!

They kindly showed us the different types of gopchang in photos hahaha. Me later on ^.^?!

Complimentary Fish Cake Soup and Gopchang Sauce
This gopchang sauce is nicely tangy and insanely delicious. It goes reaaally well with the gopchang!!! Complimentary eomuktang (fish cake soup). This is complimentaryyyyy~~~~ It was loaded with fish cakes, with a peppery kick that really came through. The broth was seriously amazing. There were so many fish cakes, plus heaps of bean sprouts. The assorted platter + gopchang arrived!! With loads of vegetables too!! They cooked the vegetables for us, and once they cooked in that sizzling fat, the vegetables became as delicious as meat!

Enjoying Each Cut of Gopchang
We started with yeomtong (beef heart). You can’t overcook beef heart or it gets tough!! So tender and fresh—good!!!

Beef heart is best when you think, “Is this maybe a little undercooked...?”

Makchang (beef abomasum), daechang (beef large intestine), and gopchang (small intestine). The makchang was chewy yet tender with no unpleasant smell, and the daechang was richly fatty and insanely delicious!!!!!

Gopchang really is the bestㅜㅜ It was full of rich gop, so savory and tender.

Pick at mushrooms and rice cakes in between, too. Thanks to that addictive gopchang fat, they taste two or three times better hahaha.

ㅜㅜㅜ Gopchangㅜㅜ If I were really rich, I’d want to eat it every day hahahahahaha.

What are we supposed to do about all this gop!!!! The gopchang connoisseur I ate with said, “This place is really good, isn’t it??” Hahahahaha. I agree.

Without us even asking, they brought more buchu (garlic chives) midway through! I ate them raw and grilled too ^.^

We didn’t ask for these either, but they brought us chilies!! So thoughtful!!!!! I crave something spicy now and then, so I loved that they brought them. Adding plenty to the sauce made such a good tangy-spicy combination. If you lay down a bed of garlic chives and put gopchang on top, it won’t burn, and the chives cook too—two birds with one stone hahaha. Maybe that’s why they brought us more 🫢🫢

Finishing with Mayo-Loaded Fried Rice
All the way through Korean-style K-dessert fried rice ^.^!! I debated the Buldak Ttongtongmyeon spicy noodles too, but....... I couldn’t resist the pull of rice^^.. They gave us mayonnaise to drizzle on if we liked it, so I poured on loads ^.^ Hahahahaha. I’ll forget about calories. How could I resist mayonnaise......

And if you put the remaining gopchang around it, it becomes a feast all over again hahahahahaha. As expected, having rice makes it feel like a proper finish ^.^ Fried rice is definitely dessert hahahaha. No, but when we ordered fried rice, they refilled the fish cake soup!!!! I’m leaving with applause for their thoughtfulness and attention to detail.... Bareun Hwangso Gopchang in Sadang had been on my must-visit list for such a long time. The classics really are classics. Recommended restaurants never betray you ^.^ We ate sooo deliciously!!!!! Gopchang is the best!!! If you’re looking for gopchang in Sadang, this is the place!!
