Seocho gimbap restaurant for perilla double-cheese rolls: Halls

In short

Halls Gimbap Main Branch is a gimbap restaurant in Seocho, Seoul. I took home double-cheese gimbap, Spam gimbap, and hot, crispy dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken), and loved the half-roll option and detailed menu choices. Verdict: the gimbap-and-chicken combination makes a simple but satisfying meal.

When you want a quick meal, gimbap is such an easy yet filling choice, right? There are lots of offices around Gyodae, and Halls Gimbap Main Branch is perfect if you want gimbap for lunch. (Though I visited in the evening haha)

At the entrance, you can see the menu and an introduction to Halls Gimbap. They say they use high-quality olive oil to cook the egg strips and fish cake. Instead of refined sugar, they use Muscovado raw sugar and unrefined cane sugar. Their dakgangjeong uses refrigerated Korean chicken thigh meat prepared early that same morning. Honestly, Halls Gimbap's dakgangjeong is really delicious,,, It turned out to be the combination of good ingredients + care + a great recipe.

Here is the Halls Gimbap menu & pricing. Once you open the door, simply order at the kiosk right inside. There are many kinds of gimbap, and the great thing about Halls Gimbap is that you can choose half rolls. Plus, their single-person set lets you enjoy gimbap + dakgangjeong! It is a great menu for someone like me who likes trying several things haha.

Interestingly, with tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), you can choose extra fish cake or extra rice cakes. I liked how they made the menu this detailed to meet customers' needs.

While waiting for my order, I took some photos inside. Menu boards were posted all around, making them easy to look at while lining up for the kiosk. For diners eating in, they also provide katsuobushi broth and hot water for cup noodles. I always get takeout, so I have never tried this brothㅠㅠ haha.

Halls Gimbap used to be ㅇㅌ Gimbap, but they changed the business name for certain reasons. The gimbap menu changed a little, but it is still delicious.

Inside Halls Gimbap

They also sell a variety of cup noodles. On a chilly day, gimbap with cup noodles is the best, right? haha

There are seats inside if you want to eat there. These counter seats look especially good for dining alone. Hair ties, tissues, and wet wipes were available, and the horse-shaped decorations dotted around were fun to look at too. There were many customers, but my takeout order came out without much of a wait. Waiting a long time during a short lunch break can be a burden, so in that respect too, it is perfect for a Gyodae lunch.

Double-cheese gimbap, Spam gimbap, and dakgangjeong

What I picked at Halls Gimbap

I hurried home and tried everything. The dakgangjeong was incredibly hot, as if it had just been fried, so they had left the lid open to keep it from getting soggy! The gimbap was wrapped with pretty pink rubber bands and labeled with stickers, making it easy to tell which was which. I ordered Spam gimbap and double-cheese gimbap. Actually, I have tried every gimbap here except the konjac gimbap, and they were all good. Just choose whatever sounds good to you that day haha.

The horse illustration is even on the chopsticks haha.

The phrase on the dakgangjeong box says, “Warning: extremely delicious!” It is totally true. Halls Gimbap's dakgangjeong has the best crunch and sauce!

The thin black-rice rice layer and generously packed fillings look pretty too, right?

They gave me sauces too, and this one is for the double-cheese gimbap. Before, there was no sticker, so I could not dip it properly; I liked that they added stickers like this.

Double-cheese gimbap with perilla leaf as the key touch

The first thing I tried was the double-cheese gimbap. Unusually, Halls Gimbap adds perilla leaf to its cheese gimbap.

Double-cheese gimbap ingredients

Like this~ all the ingredients come together beautifully, but the perilla-leaf aroma at the end is the key touch! Sometimes gimbap has raw carrot, and the carrot flavor is overpowering, but you do not need to worry about that at Halls Gimbap.

Gimbap with thick Spam

Next was the Spam gimbap. It has thick Spam, cucumber, egg strips, and pickled radish, and it was definitely saltier than the double-cheese gimbap. I guess it is because of the Spam haha. Still, the crisp, refreshing cucumber balanced the saltiness.

Crispy dakgangjeong you must try

And then, this long-awaited dakgangjeong. If you go to Halls Gimbap, you absolutely, absolutely have to try it!! It comes with sliced chilies too, and this time it was a little spicy for me, someone who cannot handle heat well. Sometimes when it is not very spicy, it is a perfect pairing with the dakgangjeong.

Look at that glossy Halls Gimbap dakgangjeong. First of all, the coating here is very, very crispy. Crispy enough to be perfect for filming ASMR, you know? haha

Glossy, crispy dakgangjeong

The pieces are just the right size to eat in one bite without any trouble. The skin is incredibly crisp, and the sauce has just the right sweetness, making this a fail-safe menu item that everyone, young and old, will enjoy.

Final thoughts

Halls Gimbap Main Branch by Gyodae Station has food that tastes excellent while still being easy to eat. The gimbap + dakgangjeong combination is the best, and there are other side dishes too. If you want a quick yet hearty lunch in Gyodae, definitely stop by.
