Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant before fireworks: mild sauce, organ

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant in Yongsan, Seoul, just 180 meters from Sinyongsan Station Exit 6. Visiting on a Saturday at 6pm before a fireworks show, the writer waited 20 minutes for the regular tteokbokki line and ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set for ₩26,000 with mild sauce and sundae (Korean blood sausage) including organs. The mild sauce was sweet enough for kids, the wheat rice cakes were soft and chewy, and the mini gimbap and fritters made for a generous, great-value spread that two people could barely finish.

A full spread of tteokbokki at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

Before heading out to watch fireworks on Saturday, I stopped by Hyeonseonine again — I'd had a great meal here before. If you're looking for a good tteokbokki spot in Yongsan, hope this review helps!

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is only about 180 meters from Sinyongsan Station Exit 6, so it's genuinely close. Look for the yellow chimney — that's Hyeonseonine. It stood out immediately since it's clearly the busiest spot on that street.

How long is the Saturday evening wait?

Saturday evening waiting line at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

I visited around 6pm on a Saturday and the wait was pretty long. They actually run separate lines for freshly-made tteokbokki and regular tteokbokki, and the freshly-made line seemed longer. I waited about 20 minutes in the regular line.

Pro tip! There's a draft beer place nearby, so I grabbed a beer while waiting and it flew by — not boring at all haha.

The vibe and seating

Interior split between freshly-made tteokbokki seating and regular seating

The restaurant is split into seats for freshly-made tteokbokki and seats for the regular kind. The freshly-made version seems to take longer. Last time I had the freshly-made style, but today I was craving the classic school-front snack shop style tteokbokki.

Clean white-toned interior and tables

The interior has a clean white tone, perfect for eating tteokbokki. I heard it started as an old-school local favorite, but now it's a very polished tteokbokki restaurant. There are lots of 2- and 4-person tables, so the line moves faster than you'd expect.

Menu and prices

This time I ordered the Hyeonseoni Combo Set, which comes loaded with sundae, fritters, mini gimbap, and eomuk (fish cake), for ₩26,000. I chose mild sauce for the tteokbokki and sundae with organs included — the portion was so generous for two people that we were almost too full to finish.

How was the mild tteokbokki and organ sundae?

This place is famous, and as a repeat visitor I can say the flavor is guaranteed. It's the kind of spot that always shows up when you search for Seoul's top three tteokbokki restaurants.

Close-up of mild-sauce wheat rice cake tteokbokki

The rice cakes are wheat-based, so they're soft and chewy — genuinely so good. It was my first time trying the mild sauce, and it was sweet enough for kids to eat, like the tteokbokki from a school-front snack shop.

Tteokbokki and sundae placed together on the table

The sundae had a more savory, roasted flavor compared to regular chapssal (glutinous rice) sundae. I used to not be able to eat sundae at all, but at some point it just started tasting amazing to me? I don't like organs though, so my partner ate those alone and said there was no funky smell at all — really tasty!

Mini gimbap included in the combo set

Mini gimbap, fritters, and fish cake

Among the sides, the mini gimbap (seaweed rice roll) was my favorite — not too thin or too small, and amazing dipped in the tteokbokki sauce. All of this for ₩26,000... the portion for the price is really solid, great value overall.

The fish cake skewers and broth were nice and refreshing, and the fritters were super crispy — really good. The sweet potato and squid fritters were especially my taste.
