Sangbong Korean BBQ after a bike ride: Super Naengsam

In short

Super Naengsam Sangbong Main Branch is a frozen pork belly Korean BBQ restaurant in Jungnang, Seoul. After cycling along Jungnangcheon, we had 3 servings of naengsam, doenjang-jjigae, Hangang ramyeon, and self-made fried rice with refilled minari. Verdict: a clean, roomy choice for a satisfying, good-value Korean BBQ meal.

The place where we had a slightly late lunch after a recent ride along Jungnangcheon was Super Naengsam Sangbong Main Branch, a popular spot in Sangbong-dong. This is a frozen pork belly specialty restaurant where you can enjoy pork belly at a good price, along with Hangang ramyeon (instant noodles cooked in a self-service machine). The self-service bar has various side dishes, unlimited minari (water celery), which is a perfect match for pork belly, and a clean, spacious dining room that makes it ideal for group gatherings or work dinners too.

A clean, bright interior

Perhaps because it has not been open long, the interior of Super Naengsam Sangbong Main Branch had a very clean feel. The window-side seating was arranged in an L shape, so it got good natural light, and there was quite a bit of space between tables too.

A self-service bar with Hangang ramyeon and side dishes

There was a self-service bar in front of the kitchen, stocked with a Hangang ramyeon machine and a variety of side dishes. There were so many kinds of ramyeon too: basics such as Shin Ramyun and Jin Ramen, plus Jjapagetti, Buldak 볶음면, and bibim noodles, so you can choose whatever suits your taste.

The first naengsam order and what we ordered

The menu at Super Naengsam Sangbong Main Branch, a pork belly specialist near Sangbong Station. There is just one meat option, frozen pork belly, and the first order must be at least 3 servings. We ordered 3 servings of naengsam (frozen pork belly), doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), Hangang ramyeon, self-service fried rice, a 300 mL draft beer, and Zero Cola.

The five commandments of Super Naengsam

The five commandments of Super Naengsam are written up too: kimchi and bean sprouts are not optional—they are essential, and fried rice is essential too, haha.

The outside restroom and basic side dishes

You use the restroom outside the restaurant, and I liked that the men's and women's rooms were separate.

First, they set up the rectangular custom grill for the pork belly, placing a paper cup at the end where the grease runs off.

After a short wait, a round tray arrived with five side dishes, sauces, and wrap vegetables. There was uncut napa cabbage kimchi, green-onion kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, pickled onions, minari to grill with the pork belly, sesame-oil sauce, and ssamjang (savory soybean dipping paste). Each side dish was neatly prepared and tasty, and since we could get minari at the self-service bar, we even had a refill and grilled it up deliciously.

Wrap vegetables served with naengsam

The wrap vegetables included green lettuce, perilla leaves, green chili peppers, and sliced garlic.

Our 3 servings of frozen pork belly arrived, piled generously with king oyster mushrooms too!

Ordered side of doenjang-jjigae

Our side of doenjang-jjigae arrived too.

The doenjang-jjigae had a rich broth and was quite delicious.

Frozen pork belly placed on the grill

On the well-heated grill, start by arranging the frozen pork belly. Put the napa cabbage kimchi and seasoned bean sprouts toward the lower side of the grill, then pile plenty of minari on top of the pork. When it is time to flip the pork belly, move the minari toward the upper side. Rather than flipping naengsam often, it tastes better if you flip it only twice!

Cooked naengsam and accompanying side dishes

Put the nicely cooked naengsam in wrap vegetables with napa cabbage kimchi, minari, garlic, and ssamjang, and it practically melts in your mouth. It was also fantastic with the pleasantly sharp green-onion kimchi, and delicious with pickled onions and seasoned bean sprouts.

The pairing of naengsam and draft beer

I debated whether to order beer, but was happy to see that they served draft beer. Thinking we would only have a little each, we ordered the small 300 mL size, and the combination of naengsam and draft beer was really good too.

Once you have eaten some of the meat, it is time to cook Hangang ramyeon. You prepare it yourself in the machine; my husband chose Jin Ramen and cooked it for us. As expected, Hangang ramyeon and pork belly were the best, the best!

Finally, you prepare the fried rice yourself.
