On the day of the Seoul Fireworks Festival, I went looking for an atmospheric restaurant to take my girlfriend to before the show. We ended up at Sushi Danya, a sushi omakase restaurant inside Seoul Garden Hotel near Mapo/Gongdeok. Here's the mood of the place and my honest review of the dinner course.

First impression of Sushi Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel

Turns out it's a great hotel omakase spot — not just for anniversaries or dates, but also for taking your parents or treating someone special. The vibe had a slight Hyatt teppan feel to it, and with a cold beer in hand I worked through seasonal croaker sashimi, rich sea urchin, and a full sushi course. Let me walk you through it in detail!

Where is Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel, and how do you book?

Danya is inside Seoul Garden Hotel at 58 Mapo-daero, Mapo-gu, Seoul, right between Gongdeok Station and Mapo Station, so it's easy to reach by transit or car. Since it's an omakase spot running mainly counter bar (dachi) seating, advance reservations are strongly recommended.

What are the counter seats at Danya like for a date?

Being inside a hotel, the place felt refined and substantial from the entrance onward. Step inside and you're greeted by calm, tidy wood-toned interiors. The lighting is warm and soft too, letting you focus fully on the meal and conversation. The table setting was clean and neat, and across the counter you could watch the chef carefully prepping ingredients and cooking — genuinely fun to watch through the whole meal.

The course we had was the Sushi Danya dinner course, which comes with a cold beer included — drinking alongside made the meal feel even richer.

Starters: pickled tomato, fig, conch and abalone steamed in sake

Refreshing palate cleanser (pickled tomato, fig & conch): before the sashimi and sushi begin in earnest, this cute little plate arrives. The conch was really chewy, looked great, and the flavors balanced nicely, waking up the whole palate.

Rich abalone braised in sake (with liver sauce): abalone served carefully on a gold-toned dish. Slow-braised until it was soft enough to eat without teeth, topped generously with a savory, rich liver sauce.

Seasonal sashimi at Danya: the croaker stood out

One of the standout dishes in the Danya dinner course was the croaker sashimi that came with the seasonal sashimi lineup.

Taste and texture: croaker is considered a top-tier restorative fish in summer and fall, so it was special to taste it in an omakase course. The clean yet chewy umami that grows the more you chew it was excellent. Thanks to the chef's careful knife work, a touch of wasabi dipped in soy sauce made it melt beautifully in the mouth — real artistry. Paired with a sip of beer, the combination was wonderful.

Danya's sushi course, from aged sea bream to sweet shrimp

After the sashimi lineup came the main sushi course. Danya's shari (sushi rice) had just the right seasoning and temperature, pairing beautifully with the neta (fish toppings).

A piece of tuna akami sushi

Aged sea bream / flounder sushi: the first white fish sushi had a subtle sweetness and the soft, chewy texture typical of aged fish.

Tuna akami & toro sushi: the bright red tuna cuts melted the moment they hit my mouth, delivering rich, fatty savoriness with just the right acidity.

Sweet shrimp sushi: sweet and clingy, the shrimp's signature richness met the shari and the sweetness seemed to explode more with every bite.

Gamtae seaweed sea urchin with fresh yuzu zest

The chef performed right in front of us, grating fresh yuzu on a slicer and sprinkling the fragrant zest over the sea urchin.

This dish — rice and generous fresh sea urchin (uni) piled onto green gamtae — was the best bite of the night, bursting with the savoriness of the sea and the brightness of yuzu. There was zero fishiness, only pure savory flavor left behind — genuinely impressive.

Futomaki packed with ingredients

Futomaki, conger eel udon and the hanwoo grill finish

The big rolled futomaki was delicious, and the conger eel udon was really good too. Tuna, rolled egg, cucumber, avocado, crab meat and more were packed in more generously than the rice, making each bite super satisfying. The way each ingredient's flavor came together kept the meal feeling substantial right through to the end.

Check out the visuals on the hanwoo (Korean beef) grill that came as the highlight haha — this is seriously good. Better than dedicated hanwoo restaurants, honestly you have to try it.

Who is this Mapo hotel omakase best for?

The dinner course at Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel hit every note — atmosphere, service, the chef's care, and food quality all came together for a satisfying meal. The flow from starters to seasonal croaker sashimi, tuna and sea urchin, and futomaki was varied and excellent, and the cold beer included in the set complemented the richness of the Japanese cuisine, lifting the flavors further.
