Korean BBQ near Hongdae, Seoul: chiletan rib set at Champpoppo

In short

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch is a pork rib (jjokgalbi) restaurant between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations in Mapo, Seoul. On a weekend date night the order was the chiletan set — soy-marinated ribs for one, spicy ribs for two, steamed egg and a chiletan rice ball — at 51,000 won, plus an extra cheese fondue, and the free chicken porridge and pork skin served during the 15-minute pre-grill were standouts. Spicy jjokgalbi dipped in the nutty cheese fondue is the highlight at Champpoppo.

Exterior of Champpoppo Jjokgalbi near Hapjeong Station

Where is Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch, and how long is the weekend wait?

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi, right between Hapjeong Station and Sangsu Station! It just opened recently, and I visited for a weekend date. Weekend waits here are basically guaranteed, so we went before dinner rush and got lucky with a table! Right around when we finished eating, the line was already starting to form, ugh.

Cozy interior with about 8 tables

What comes in the 51,000-won chiletan set at Champpoppo?

Champpoppo Jjokgalbi Hapjeong Branch was on the smaller side but had about 8 tables! Looked really good for a group dinner too. You order via tablet, and they run a lot of review events, so keep that in mind.

We ordered the chiletan set: soy jjokgalbi (1 serving) + spicy jjokgalbi (2 servings) + steamed egg + chiletan rice ball, all for ₩51,000 — a set I highly recommend!!!

Free chicken porridge, side dishes and cheesy steamed egg

The free side dishes were cabbage salad, white kimchi, radish pickle, pickled onion, corn cheese, and 3 sauces. The white kimchi went really well with the jjokgalbi.

They put the corn cheese right on the grill for us. The fire was strong so it bubbled up quickly!

And here's the best part about Champpoppo Jjokgalbi..♡ the free chicken porridge!!!!!!!! It comes out piping hot so be careful!!!!!! The seasoning was exactly right too, perfect for settling your stomach before drinking.

The steamed egg is a cheese version, so it's totally jiggly and soft. Cheese steamed egg, need I say more ..♡

Pork skin served during the 15-minute pre-grill

The jjokgalbi comes pre-grilled when ordered, so it takes about 15 minutes, and while you wait they give you pork skin to snack on ....♡ What even is this place ....? Amazing 👍🏻 The pork skin had zero smell and tasted incredible dipped in the spicy sauce!

The chiletan rice ball that comes with the set is huge, and it's packed with cartilage and flying fish roe!!!!

You eat the rice ball with a spoon. Heheh.

How to grill the soy-marinated jjokgalbi: flip, then 30 seconds

They put the soy jjokgalbi on first, and what's in the photo is one serving! The portion is really generous 👍🏻 Since the jjokgalbi comes pre-grilled, you grill bone-side down until it starts sizzling, then flip and give it 30 seconds!

Go over 30 seconds and it burns ^^! Haha. There was so much meat on the ribs that it was really satisfying to tear off ...♡ The soy sauce seasoning itself was so tasty, and the meat was tender, great for pulling apart!

Tear off just the meat and eat it with the rice ball!!!!!! So good.

Why the spicy jjokgalbi needs the cheese fondue add-on

They put the spicy jjokgalbi on next. This kind is the spicy one!!!

We ordered cheese fondue to eat with the spicy jjokgalbi. Cheese is a must ~~~~~~~~♡

Spicy jjokgalbi dipped in the added cheese fondue

Spicy jjokgalbi with cheese fondue — how do you even resist .....♡ The jjokgalbi sauce wasn't that spicy, but the cheese was so nutty and rich that it paired perfectly!!!!! Totally recommend the cheese, ha-ha.

Leftover stone pots at the end of the meal

By the time we were finishing up, somehow all 3 stone pots had ended up in front of my husband .... lol lol lol. What's going on .....? ^________^ Anyway, we came for a date and ate so, so well!!!!!!! Heheh. Totally recommend this Hapjeong date spot ♡
