Sinseol-dong Korean restaurant, 3 banchan refills: Hansang Charyim
In short
Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong is an old-school Korean restaurant near Exit 3 of Sinseol-dong Station in Dongdaemun, Seoul. The hansang bossam set for two filled the table with tray after tray of rustic, salty aged side dishes that tasted like they came straight from a countryside jangdokdae (earthenware jar terrace), with three side dish refills allowed. Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong suits anyone after the sheer abundance of a country home-style spread rather than refined flavors.

Today I visited Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong. Let me introduce this restaurant, which used to be known as the go-to Sinseol-dong local eatery.

Where is Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong, and what does it look like?
Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong is close to Exit 3 of Sinseol-dong Station. It's also close to Anam Bridge, so it'd be nice to eat and take a walk afterward. There are a lot of schools nearby too, like Daegwang Middle and Daegwang High, so it's pretty accessible.
Walking inside, the place had that unmistakable neighborhood-diner feel, with the weight of years all over it. Outside there were even banners promoting makgeolli (rice wine)! I also learned there's a product called honey butter almond wine. Anyway, let's go in together.

Business hours were as posted at the restaurant. It'd be good to check before you visit.
The menu and ordering the hansang bossam set for two
The menu at Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong is broadly built around bossam, galbi, and an optional hot stone pot rice add-on. There were also pancakes, fried snacks, drinking-food dishes, and various alcohols available. After some deliberation, we ended up ordering the hansang bossam set for two.

What do the tray-loads of side dishes taste like?
After we ordered and chatted for a bit, the side dishes that are basically this restaurant's signature started coming out, tray after tray in a row. Watching every empty spot on the table get filled up as each plate landed was genuinely a sight — visually, it was overflowing.
There was a strong flavor of long-fermented dishes, rustic and salty, like something pulled straight out of a countryside earthenware jar.

This leans more toward people who enjoy the aged, deeply sour-ish flavor of well-fermented, long-kept side dishes, rather than those who prefer freshly made, crisp, bright vegetable sides.

Since many of the dishes are prepared in advance and served at room temperature, folks who are sensitive about temperature or freshness might find this a bit polarizing.
In an era of rising food prices like now, it's genuinely not easy to face a table this full of side dishes and meat. If you're not expecting refined flavors or piping-hot warmth, but instead want to experience the heavy, rustic feel of a countryside diner's home-style spread, this could be worth checking out.

The bossam and galbi: main meat served slightly cooled
Among the packed side dishes, the meat dish that serves as today's main also took its place on the table. Here, it's served cooled slightly after cooking, giving it a cleaner, more subdued style. It'll probably suit people who enjoy a chewier texture.

Side dish refill rules: 3 refills and an ordering tip
For environmental reasons, Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong allows up to 3 additional side dish refills. And if there are foods you won't eat, you can just tell them upfront to leave them out.
Given today's dining-out prices, the sheer visual abundance — plates covering the table until it practically groans — really caught the eye. I heard this place used to be known as the go-to Sinseol-dong local eatery! The real point here is the spread itself: a wide variety of rustic, salty, old-style countryside side dishes.

That wraps up my thoughts on the taste.

Inside the restaurant: atmosphere and seating
The interior of Hansang Charyim Bapsang Sinseol-dong carries the heavy weight of years, like an old alley diner you'd have visited as a kid holding your parents' hands, or a small-town eatery in the countryside. It's a space that'll suit people who can comfortably enjoy that cozy, old-school local diner atmosphere.

It's the kind of place where you can go in casual clothes, no need to dress up, and just eat a comfortable, no-fuss meal.
Some people will probably really feel that old-diner charm in the raw, unpolished, unpretentious atmosphere. There were also several autographs on one of the walls, so it seems plenty of people have passed through.
