Thick squid fritters and combo set at Hyeonseonine, a Yongsan
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a spicy tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) restaurant a 5-minute walk from Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station in Seoul. Visiting on a Saturday at 5:30pm, the posted wait was 70 minutes but actual entry took just 20, and the Hyeonseoni combo set (₩26,000) delivered tteokbokki, fritters, sundae, mini gimbap and fish cakes all at once. The tteokbokki topped with self-bar fritter crumbs and the thick, meaty squid fritters were the standout combination.

Today I'm introducing a place known as one of Seoul's top three tteokbokki spots and a holy site for spicy tteokbokki — Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch!

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch

An old-school spot turned standalone building, 5 minutes from Sinyongsan Station
It's a 5-minute walk from both Yongsan Station and Sinyongsan Station, so it's really easy to get to by public transit~ This place was famous back when it was a street food cart, but now it's a clean, spacious standalone building :)

There's even a Hyeonseonine meal-kit gachapon machine outside haha
How long is the wait on a Saturday at 5:30pm?
I visited around 5:30pm on a Saturday and there was a wait! When I registered, the estimated wait time showed 70 minutes, which worried me a bit, but I actually got seated in about 20 minutes! The restaurant is spacious and, being a snack place, table turnover is super fast, so the line moved along quickly~

The restaurant has fast turnover and plenty of seating!

Feel free to grab whatever you need from the self-bar!

Kiosk ordering and the ₩26,000 Hyeonseoni combo set
You can order easily at the entrance kiosk, choosing between regular cooking or made-to-order tteokbokki depending on your preference!
We ordered the Hyeonseoni combo set (₩26,000), which lets you fully enjoy tteokbokki, fritters, sundae (Korean blood sausage), mini gimbap, and fish cakes!

Spice level tips
- Spicy: Above Buldak Bokkeum-myeon level! Tear-inducing, stress-relieving spiciness 🔥
- Not spicy: Sweet and savory, like old-school tteokbokki from in front of a school 😋
- Half-and-half (medium): The golden ratio of spicy and mild! (recommended for those who can't handle spice)

Ahh, this looks so good, , ,

The wheat-flour rice cakes have that signature soft, chewy texture, fully soaked in an addictively spicy and savory sauce~!
The first bite is spicy-sweet, but the more you eat, the more a gentle heat builds up, making you scoop up the sauce with a spoon :)

The self-bar fritter crumb tip
Here's an essential Hyeonseonine-only tip — piling the crispy fritter crumbs prepared at the self-bar generously on top of your tteokbokki!

The glossy, chewy sundae gets more satisfying with every bite, and the bite-sized mini gimbap, though simple inside, keeps you reaching for more ✨ Taking a bite of tteokbokki, then cooling the heat with gimbap and sundae, was the perfect pairing!

The squid fritter is the clear number one among the fritters
Crispy outside, tender inside fritters are a must-dip in the tteokbokki sauce! The clear number one among the fritters was the squid fritter! 🦑 Unlike most snack shops where the batter is thick but the squid inside is thin, this one had thick, hearty squid that was tender and chewy with zero toughness~

Just as the spiciness builds up, a sip of the deep, rich fish cake broth warms you right back up, completing the perfect Korean snack food full course 🍢
Spicy tteokbokki with crispy fritter crumbs and the fully-packed squid fritter is a combination you absolutely must try here! The sundae and mini gimbap stayed true to basics and paired perfectly with the tteokbokki sauce~ Finishing it all off with the fish cake broth made it instantly clear why people line up for this place ✨

To sum up
I left completely satisfied with the addictive flavors and generous portions — well worth the wait! If you're looking for a great snack restaurant near Yongsan I'Park Mall or Yongridan-gil, I highly recommend Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch. Don't forget to pile on the fritter crumbs on your tteokbokki and pair it with the squid fritter! 🤍✨
