Yongsan tteokbokki restaurant weekday morning kiosk order

In short

Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is a long-running instant tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cake) restaurant on Hangang-daero 39-gil in Yongsan, Seoul. Visiting on a weekday morning, the writer ordered medium-spice instant tteokbokki, assorted fritters, and fried rice via kiosk, filling in with self-bar side dishes, fish cake broth, and frying powder. The spice level was as mild as shin ramyun, and the frying powder-and-fried rice combo made it a solid pick solo or with company.

I had somewhere to be in Yongsan on a weekday morning, so I finally made it to this old-school tteokbokki spot I'd bookmarked ages ago!!

A Yongsan old-timer that fills up even on a weekday morning

Even on a weekday morning, the place filled up fast. Turns out the saying that famous restaurants have no off-hours really is true. There seem to be other branches, but this looks like the main one, and the exterior alone radiated years of history in Yongsan. There were even chairs set up outside the entrance for waiting, which made me think — this must really be the real deal!!

The interior

Bright and spacious restaurant interior
Interior seating with an old-school feel

You could tell it was an old-school spot just from the outside. It had a completely different feel from the trendy, newly-designed places popping up these days — and honestly, that was even better. I love that atmosphere only a place can have after being loved in the same spot for so long~~ The inside was brighter and cozier than I expected, and the space was big enough to comfortably fit a group.

Order by kiosk, drinks available in the evening

You order through a kiosk, so picking a menu was easy. They seem to serve alcohol too, so if you come in the evening it looks like the perfect spot for tteokbokki with a drink. Whether you come for lunch or as a second stop for the evening, the space works for both!+!

Instant tteokbokki, fritters, fried rice, and a self-bar too

I ordered the instant tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cake), fritters, and fried rice! If you want more, rice cakes and fish cakes can be added individually so you can top up however you like! Once you sit down, you can freely grab basic side dishes from the self-bar, so it was easy to pile on extras without worry. They also brought over fish cake broth, and a sip of that was perfect whenever the tteokbokki got a little spicy.

Cooking instructions for instant tteokbokki

There's a trick to the instant tteokbokki — follow it exactly and you get a delicious pot.

Two eggs included by default

Tteokbokki finished with sauce mixed in

Once you mix it so everything's coated in sauce, the flavor was truly on point.

What's different here: frying powder

There was one thing that clearly set this place apart from other instant tteokbokki spots — they give you frying powder on the side!! Dipping the powder into the tteokbokki sauce added texture and made everything taste even better, ㅠㅠㅠ

Medium spice is about shin ramyun level

The rice cakes were wonderfully chewy, and I ordered medium spice, which turned out to be right around shin ramyun level — just right! Not too intense, but with plenty of savory depth, so I kept reaching for more. The chewy noodles soaked in sauce were amazing too, and there was plenty of broth left over, perfect for dipping the fritters.

Fried mandu dropped into the broth

For fritters, I got the assorted platter with squid fritters, sweet potato fritters, and more, and the quality was way better than I expected!! Especially the fried mandu (dumpling) — dropping it into the tteokbokki broth let it soak up all the sauce, which made it amazing.

Fried rice: make it yourself

And even though I was already full, the moment the fried rice ingredients showed up, my hand reached out again. You make the fried rice yourself, scooping in as much sauce as you like! It was really nutty and had corn kernels mixed in for a nice bite — genuinely delicious. ㅠㅠ That day I learned for sure: no matter how full you are, you can never skip this fried rice at an instant tteokbokki place...

Final thoughts

Honestly, if I'm ever torn about where to get instant tteokbokki in Yongsan, I don't think I'll hesitate to come back here. You can adjust the spice level, there's a self-bar, and the tteokbokki-fritters-fried rice combo is perfect, so it works well whether you're solo or with a friend. It'd also be great for a light evening drink. This time I had the instant tteokbokki, but there's a regular tteokbokki menu too, so next time I'm definitely trying that!!
