Black pork grill in Gyeongan-dong, Gwangju: Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ

On a heavily rainy Monday evening, my sister — who had left for work that morning declaring "diet starts today!" — texted me.

"Are we grilling something sizzling for dinner tonight?"

And just like that, dinner was decided: meat, haha.

Then I remembered a place near us in Gyeongan-dong with a Jeju vibe that I'd walked past not long ago — Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch. Two dol hareubang (stone grandfather statues) stood side by side at the entrance, and I'd laughed to myself walking past them before. It's a black pork barbecue specialty restaurant, and even the entrance had that unmistakable good-restaurant feel — I'd been thinking 'I should go there sometime.'

Perfect timing, so I booked on Naver right away! I also asked about baby chairs while booking, and the kindness in their reply alone gave me a good feeling. And sure enough, my instinct was right.

Where Jeju Oktop is and where to park

Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch is at 11-13 Gwangju-daero, 1st floor, Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. It's across from E-mart Gyeonggi Gwangju, but tucked slightly inward, so despite passing through this neighborhood often, I never knew such a great place was here. I only discovered it recently while running errands nearby.

For parking, use the nearby Munhwa Wedding Hall lot — just walk about a minute to the left from the exit.

Baby chairs and seating: why Jeju Oktop works with a child

Arriving at the restaurant, we were greeted warmly by staff under a big "HELLO JEJU" sign. Walking inside, there was another dol hareubang, haha. There's a saying that rubbing its nose helps you have a son, so anyone hoping for one can rub away here, haha.

Thanks to our reservation, our table was already set up, complete with the baby chair we'd requested.

A dry-aging fridge sat right in the center of the restaurant, where the meat must have been aging deliciously.

When you visit a barbecue restaurant with a baby, all-fixed-sofa seating can be surprisingly inconvenient. Here, the mix of sofa and regular chairs made it easy to fit the baby chair in, which I liked.

Signature BBQ B-set, 72,000 won, with black pork shoulder rack as the main

That day we ordered one of Jeju Oktop's signature menus, the Signature BBQ B-set (₩72,000). It's built for 3–4 people, and you choose the main meat from black pork bon-samgyeop, black pork fresh galbi, or black pork shoulder rack, served alongside black pork belly 150g + black pork collar 150g + black pork skin 150g + grilled vegetables.

We chose black pork shoulder rack as our main. Honestly all three looked delicious and we hesitated, but the manager recommended the shoulder rack as tender and easy to eat with a baby around.

First came neat, tidy side dishes. I was glad to see myeong-i namul (mountain garlic leaves), one of my favorites.

And finally, our meat arrived! It's been ages since I had pork skin. Not since my mid-twenties hanging out with friends in Sinchon. My sister was just as happy to see it.

Staff grill every cut from start to finish

That day the manager grilled our meat himself — at Jeju Oktop, staff grill everything from start to finish. For a family with a baby like ours, that's a genuinely welcome service!

One person tends the baby, one grills, and the other takes over baby duty — you end up eating in a rush. Barbecue with a baby is often chaotic, but having the meat grilled for us meant we could just relax and eat, which was wonderful.

When I said "It's so nice having the meat grilled for us~," he told us this is exactly why nearby banks and big companies often hold group dinners here. Thinking about it, at company dinners someone's always stuck grilling instead of eating properly — here, since staff grill it themselves, no one is left out and everyone can enjoy the gathering.

Which sauce and seasoning goes with each cut

A variety of sauces and seasonings were prepared too. We learned that even with the same pork, different cuts have different flavors and textures, so pairing them with the right sauce or seasoning makes a difference.

Various sauces and seasonings served for different cuts

Listening to the explanations while trying different sauces one by one made the pork feel even more special. The king oyster mushrooms dipped in cheese sauce were especially unique. And of course, meat grilled by a pro tastes better!

They also ask whether you'd like the fatty end of the belly trimmed off or left on while grilling.

Best of all, when we grill ourselves we always end up burning the meat while chatting — no such worry here, haha. The heat on the grill was strong too, so the meat cooked quickly.

We enjoyed it in this order: shoulder rack, belly, collar, skin. The meat itself was so good that personally I preferred eating it plain rather than wrapped in lettuce. Great texture, tender, and full of flavor.

Extra orders: gabrisal special cut, hairtail-jeot fried rice and cold naengmyeon

We also ordered steamed egg, one special cut (130g, ₩16,000), hairtail-jeot fried rice (₩8,000), and water naengmyeon (₩7,000). The special cut isn't fixed — it can be gabrisal, hangjeongsal, or galmaegisal depending on the day. That day's special cut was gabrisal!

Slightly chewy with a nutty flavor — we enjoyed this one too.

The manager's small touches, right down to the baby's portion

What I especially appreciated that day was the manager's careful attention at our table. Visiting with a baby often means worrying about portion sizes or seasoning, but without me even asking, he cut the baby's meat into extra-small pieces.

Meat cut small for the baby alongside steamed egg

The steamed egg we ordered was also mildly seasoned, perfect for the baby. I suspect they made it lighter knowing a baby would be eating too.

With such small details taken care of, it was much easier to dine comfortably with a baby. Plus, every staff member was bright and friendly, so we had a pleasant time from start to finish.

Bonus: we clearly came to a neighborhood restaurant, yet it felt like a brief trip to Jeju. Timing was perfect too, since our family had recently been singing about wanting to visit Jeju, haha.

While paying, I told the manager and staff, "We'll probably come back often, so please remember our faces~" My sister was mortified and walked out ahead of me muttering "why are you like this," haha.

And so we discovered another great neighborhood barbecue restaurant. The meat was delicious, but what stuck with me most was having it grilled for us start to finish, plus the thoughtful touches — from the baby chair to cutting the baby's portion small. It's comfortable enough to visit with a baby that our family will likely keep coming back to Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch whenever we're craving barbecue 😊
