Sokcho restaurant with a self-serve banchan bar: Deungdae Gotgan
In short
Deungdae Gotgan is a Korean restaurant specializing in octopus dishes on Yeongnang Coastal Road in Sokcho, right in front of Deungdae Beach. On the way from a hotel checkout to Goseong, the writer ordered nakji haejangguk (octopus hangover soup), jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and a pork cutlet for the kids, then topped up the side dishes as much as wanted at the self-serve banchan corner. With floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows and an 8am opening, Deungdae Gotgan makes an ideal first meal of a Sokcho trip.

On our last trip to Sokcho, after checking out and eating an early breakfast, we headed toward Goseong — home to a military experience site — and stopped by Deungdae Gotgan along the way. It's close to where we were staying and opens early, making it perfect for breakfast. Mostly though, I kept thinking about the nakji haejangguk (octopus hangover soup) I'd had on a previous visit, so there was no hesitation about going back.

Ocean-view window seats facing Deungdae Beach
Walking into Deungdae Gotgan, a favorite for octopus dishes right in front of Deungdae Beach, the first thing that grabs you is the ocean view! Sitting by the window with the wide sea and rolling waves right in front of us, eating breakfast felt almost like eating on top of the ocean. Watching the morning sunlight sparkle on the water only added to the excitement of being on a trip. The interior is clean and pleasant, making it a comfortable spot to enjoy breakfast.

Since it's a two-story building with floor-to-ceiling windows, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Deungdae Beach from pretty much anywhere inside. The lighthouse and sea visible through the windows made a gorgeous picture all on their own. Enjoying a leisurely breakfast while taking in a view like that — hard to imagine anything more perfect!

How the self-serve banchan corner at Deungdae Gotgan works
Another charm of this favorite spot by Deungdae Beach is the neat, flavorful banchan (side dishes). Pickled radish, seasoned bean sprouts, stir-fried Vienna sausages, yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi), stir-fried zucchini, roasted seaweed, and even bean sprout soup! It all felt as thoughtfully made as home cooking. Even better, whatever you run out of, you can help yourself to more at the self-serve corner.

We ordered the nakji haejangguk we'd been looking forward to, along with jeyuk bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork), and a pork cutlet for the kids.
Nakji haejangguk: the octopus hangover soup that clears your head
Finally, the nakji haejangguk from this Deungdae Beach breakfast favorite, again! Packed generously with fresh octopus, along with tofu, bean sprouts, and minari (water celery), the broth was simply outstanding. It wasn't overly sharp, but cool and spicy in the best way, the kind that seems to wash away the fatigue of the day before. It's honestly why I keep coming back to Deungdae Gotgan. The chewy texture of the octopus, soft tofu, and crunchy bean sprouts came together so well I couldn't put my spoon down.

Jeyuk bokkeum: sweet, spicy stir-fried pork over rice
My husband's jeyuk bokkeum came out on a huge plate, piled high, and it looked mouthwatering just to see. The spicy-sweet sauce soaked well into the pork, making it perfect with rice. Stir-fried with crunchy cabbage and onion, the texture was great too, and a sprinkle of nutty sesame seeds added extra flavor. Mixed straight into the rice, it was pure rice-thief territory.

Pork cutlet, the dish both kids and adults order
Even though octopus dishes are the signature here, Deungdae Gotgan's pork cutlet was delicious too. Crispy fried to perfection, it's the kind of dish anyone would love. The thick cut of meat was juicy, pairing well with the crunchy breading. Dipped in the accompanying cutlet sauce, the kids devoured it happily. Served with black rice, corn kernels, cabbage salad, and pickled radish, the full spread made the meal even more satisfying.

Why Deungdae Gotgan works as the first meal of a Sokcho trip
Deungdae Gotgan is a Sokcho favorite that has it all: a stunning ocean view, delicious food, and friendly service. Opening early in the morning, it's the kind of place that gives your Sokcho trip a solid start. In particular, I really recommend trying the deep, refreshing nakji haejangguk. If you're near Deungdae Beach in Sokcho looking for a great breakfast or a solid Korean restaurant, definitely give Deungdae Gotgan a visit!
