No-parking weekend visit to a Mokdong gopchang restaurant: Omokgyo

In short

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a gopchang (grilled beef intestine) restaurant near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul, with garlic gopchang as its signature dish. On a weekend visit the writer ordered the mixed gopchang platter for two — garlic gopchang, hwangso gopchang, daechang, makchang, honeycomb tripe and grilled heart — then finished with Omokgyo dongchimi noodles and fried rice. Clean-tasting with no gamey smell and ideal for trying several cuts in one sitting, though Omokgyo Gopchang has no parking of its own.

I was craving gopchang (grilled beef intestine) near Omokgyo and went looking, which led me to Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, famous for its garlic gopchang. Since garlic gopchang is the signature menu, I was curious to try it, but this time I picked a menu that let me taste several cuts at once instead of just one. And since stopping at gopchang alone felt like it wasn't enough, I also had the Omokgyo dongchimi noodles and fried rice — overall it was clean with no gamey smell, so I left really satisfied :)

Where is Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, and is there parking?

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is near Omokgyo Station, so it was easy to get to by public transit. It's not far from the station, so it felt low-pressure to set up a meetup here, and with restaurants and cafés nearby, it was convenient to move around before or after eating.

That said, parking wasn't available. If you're planning to drive, I'd recommend checking a nearby paid or public parking lot ahead of time.

Once seated and looking at the menu, the garlic gopchang, the signature dish, naturally stood out most. Since I came specifically because it's famous, I definitely wanted to try it, but I also wanted to enjoy several cuts together rather than just one, so I ordered the mixed gopchang for two. It comes with garlic gopchang, hwangso gopchang, daechang, makchang, beehive tripe, and grilled heart all together, so I liked being able to taste each cut evenly. The owner was friendly when taking the order, and the staff were easy to deal with, so even on a first visit I could eat comfortably.

The complimentary sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) was satisfying too. The broth was spicy and sharp, so it was nice to spoon it up in between bites of gopchang, and it cut through any greasiness well.

Tangy, well-fermented scallion kimchi side dish

The scallion kimchi that came with it was also delicious. It was tangy and well-fermented, tasty even eaten plain, but grilling it lightly on the pan made the scallions softer with a subtle sweetness added on top. Paired with gopchang or daechang, it cut the greasiness even more — personally, I'd recommend grilling it.

The fire show and how each gopchang cut tastes

As soon as the main mixed gopchang order arrived, they put on a fire show right away, which grabbed my attention from the start. The flames flaring up were pretty impressive to watch, and it made the gopchang feel even tastier. Overall there was hardly any gamey smell. Offal can be a bit much to eat if there's even a little odor, but that day I could eat it cleanly without any of that.

The garlic gopchang had the savory taste of gopchang with added garlic flavor — I could see why it's the signature dish. The daechang was soft and rich. The makchang and beehive tripe kept a chewy texture, and adding the grilled heart on top made it clear each cut had its own distinct charm.

Omokgyo dongchimi noodles and egg-swirled fried rice to finish

A refreshing bowl of Omokgyo dongchimi noodles

After eating a good amount of gopchang, I ordered the Omokgyo dongchimi noodles. The cool, tangy broth cleaned my palate and paired well with the gopchang — much more refreshing than just eating meat the whole time.

Fried rice swirled with egg at the gopchang restaurant

We finished with fried rice. Beaten egg was swirled around the edges of the fried rice so you could cook it in as you ate, and the added egg made it taste even more savory and soft. The fried rice portion was also pretty generous, so even split between two people, we ended up completely full. Even after already eating gopchang and dongchimi noodles, I enjoyed it deliciously all the way to the end!

Is Omokgyo Gopchang in Mokdong worth a visit?

It was clean with no gamey smell, and everything from the complimentary sundubu-jjigae to the tangy scallion kimchi paired well with the gopchang. Finishing with a palate-cleansing bowl of dongchimi noodles and then fried rice made for a satisfying, well-rounded menu. What stuck with me most was grilling the scallion kimchi lightly on the pan and eating it with the gopchang, and the owner and staff were friendly the whole meal, which made it comfortable throughout.

If you're looking for a Korean BBQ or gopchang restaurant near Omokgyo, I'd recommend Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch. If you want to enjoy several cuts evenly, ordering the mixed gopchang with garlic gopchang included is a good way to go :)
