Wondang makguksu restaurant with kids' tableware: Bongpyeong Gohyang

On a weekend, a bit past lunchtime, I was craving makguksu (cold buckwheat noodles) so I headed to Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, a well-known spot in Wondang.

We got there around 3pm, a bit late for a proper meal, but customers kept coming in even at that hour. There was a group of customers the day we visited, and quite a few people inside the restaurant.

A Wondang makguksu restaurant that's easy to park at

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu has a wide parking area next to the building, so it was easy to visit by car. The inside was bigger than I expected too, which made it comfortable for a family meal.

Looking at the menu, I noticed they sell suyuk (boiled pork) as well as makguksu. At first I only looked at the noodles and skipped over the suyuk, but it turns out you can order it in a half size too. Next time I want to try a half plate of suyuk together with makguksu!

There was a Kakao QR code at the table so you could check the menu and order from your phone. You could also just order from the menu board, so whichever way is easier for you works fine.

Since we came with the kids, I really appreciated that kids' dishes were ready to use. Little ones can find adult tableware awkward sometimes, so it was nice not having to bring our own^^

Mul-makguksu, bibim-makguksu and perilla buckwheat makguksu

We ordered three bowls of makguksu at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu. My husband picked mul-makguksu (cold noodles in broth), I went with bibim-makguksu (spicy mixed noodles), and the kids chose the perilla buckwheat makguksu. You could also choose a larger noodle portion, but even the regular size I ordered was plenty!

After a short wait, the barley rice and kimchi came out first.

Mixing the barley rice with gochujang (red chili paste) really woke up my appetite. It was great to nibble on while waiting for the makguksu^^

Water was self-serve, and there was buckwheat noodle tea set out separately so we could drink it warm. About 10 minutes after ordering, the makguksu bowls started coming out one by one.

How the makguksu tasted: light and clean

The mul-makguksu at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu was refreshing and cold, and my husband finished it cleanly.

My bibim-makguksu had the sauce mixed well into the noodles, spicy and sweet in a good balance. I generally love bibim-style makguksu, so this one really suited my taste.

The perilla buckwheat makguksu the kids ordered is served warm, which made it a good choice for visiting with children.

The nutty flavor of perilla blended with the buckwheat noodles, so it wasn't harsh and was soft to eat, and the kids ate more than I expected — probably because it was a warm noodle dish.

The broth in the perilla buckwheat makguksu had that deep, distinctive perilla richness without being too strong, so it was easy to eat with a child, and it paired nicely with the plain buckwheat noodles!

Still filling up at 3pm on a weekend

Since we visited around 3pm, well past the usual lunch hour, I thought it would be a bit quiet. But customers kept coming in the whole time we were eating. There were group customers and families too, which made me think this really is a popular spot in Wondang.

After finishing the makguksu, we wrapped things up leisurely with a cup of mix coffee.

We ate every last bit, and it was delicious ^^

With plenty of parking and a spacious dining room, Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu was a comfortable spot in Wondang for a weekend meal with family. Next time I want to properly try the makguksu together with a half order of suyuk.
