Gwangju brunch restaurant, pumpkin soup and grapefruit juice: Bueokgan
In short
Bueokgan Suwan Branch is a brunch and Italian restaurant in the Suwan district of Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. The order here was sweet pumpkin soup served plain without the pastry lid, shrimp anchovy oil pasta and abalone cream risotto, with grapefruit and orange juice. The briny oil pasta and the nutty abalone risotto never overlapped in flavour, so the three dishes worked well as one meal for sharing.

These days, it's not just about good food — I find myself looking for places where I can enjoy the atmosphere along with the meal. Especially for a lunch appointment or a date after a while, I'm drawn to somewhere that's not too casual, with decent food and a good vibe.
When looking for a brunch or date spot in the Suwan district of Gwangju, I stopped by Bueokgan Suwan Branch (부엌간 수완점), a place worth checking out. I was craving pasta and risotto, so we ordered pumpkin soup, shrimp anchovy oil pasta, and abalone cream risotto.
This is the umpteenth time I've come here, and every time it's the same: crowded, great atmosphere, and genuinely delicious food.

Inside the Suwan district restaurant

The interior is clean and tidy — every time I come here, it feels like I've stepped into a European restaurant.
What's on the menu at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

Bueokgan is known for its brunch, so there's a wide variety of Western-style dishes, and there are also good-value set menus that come with a drink and soup.
Sweet pumpkin soup ordered plain, without the pastry lid
This time, I ordered Bueokgan Suwan's signature pumpkin soup plain, without adding the pastry. It came out first along with the drinks.

My pumpkin soup arrived together with the drinks.

The pumpkin soup is Bueokgan's signature soup — if you add the pastry, a piece of bread sits on top of the soup, crispy on its own and soft and moist when dipped in the soup, which makes it even more delicious! Today, though, I wanted to really taste the pumpkin, so I ordered it plain without the pastry.

The grapefruit and orange juice were pretty colors too.
How the shrimp anchovy oil pasta tasted
Bueokgan Suwan's shrimp anchovy oil pasta had a clear direction of flavor thanks to the umami from the anchovy. Even though it's an oil pasta, it never felt bland or like something you'd tire of quickly.

Then came the shrimp anchovy oil pasta. These days I find myself ordering oil or tomato-based pasta more often than cream, maybe because they just taste better lately.

Oil pasta can easily end up either bland or, on the flip side, tiresome from too much oil — but here the distinctive umami of the anchovy gave it a clear direction of flavor. Best of all, the shrimp added a fun texture to break up the noodles instead of just eating pasta the whole time. At first it tasted like a light, clean oil pasta, but the salty savoriness of the anchovy would rise up afterward, so the flavor never felt monotonous through the whole plate.

The shrimp were nice and plump too, great in both texture and taste.

How was the abalone cream risotto?
The last dish was the abalone cream risotto. It had a distinct abalone flavor unlike a regular cream risotto, so it felt less heavy the further along I ate.

Honestly, risotto can be delicious for the first few bites but start feeling heavy toward the end if the cream sauce is too rich. But with abalone in it, the flavor was clearly different from a typical cream risotto. The abalone flavor came through the smooth cream, and you could feel its texture as you chewed the rice — it was a totally different kind of fun compared to the pasta.

Especially since we ordered it alongside the oil pasta that day, we got to switch between the clean, salty pasta and the smooth, savory risotto — and I liked that the two dishes didn't overlap in flavor.
Do the three dishes work together? The verdict
To sum up what we ordered at Bueokgan Suwan Branch this time: pumpkin soup, shrimp anchovy oil pasta, and abalone cream risotto — three dishes in all. Each one had a slightly different character, so ordering them together didn't feel like the flavors overlapped.
From the gently starting pumpkin soup, to the savory umami of the oil pasta, to the rich, nutty abalone cream risotto — the flavors were distinct from start to finish, and I really enjoyed the meal. If you're looking for a good restaurant in the Suwan district, I recommend Bueokgan Suwan Branch.
