Pohang mulhoe restaurant near Spacewalk for lunch with a kid: Ppwang

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe (퐝물회) is a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and raw fish restaurant on Haean-ro in Buk-gu, Pohang, a 4-minute drive from the Spacewalk sculpture. Lunch here after Spacewalk was squid mulhoe and half-and-half mulhoe at 20,000 won each plus fried squid at 15,000 won, and the self-serve bar with tteokbokki and fritters kept the kid fed. Ppwang Mulhoe works as a family travel lunch: a generous mulhoe for adults, the self-serve bar for children.

While traveling around Pohang, after visiting Spacewalk we were trying to figure out what to have for lunch, and that's how we ended up at Ppwang Mulhoe. Since we'd come all the way to Pohang, I felt like we had to try mulhoe (raw fish in cold savory-spicy broth) at least once, and it was also a quick drive from Spacewalk, so it fit nicely into our travel route.

We ordered squid mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe, and fried squid. The mulhoe was satisfying on its own, but as someone visiting with a kid, I especially appreciated the variety at the self-serve bar.

How far is Ppwang Mulhoe from Pohang Spacewalk? A 4-minute drive

Route from Pohang Spacewalk to Ppwang Mulhoe

We went sightseeing at Pohang Spacewalk and then headed straight to Ppwang Mulhoe. It only took about 4 minutes by car, so it was easy to pair the two together. When you're traveling around Pohang, having to travel far from one attraction to find a restaurant can get surprisingly tiring — so a route like ours, Spacewalk → Ppwang Mulhoe → Yeongildae, seems like a solid plan.

Why the Ppwang Mulhoe self-serve bar works with kids

One of the first things that caught my eye walking into Ppwang Mulhoe was the self-serve bar! I was expecting the usual raw-fish-restaurant self bar, but the variety was more than I imagined.

Tteokbokki and fried snacks at the self-serve bar

Beyond side dishes, there were kid-friendly snacks like tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and fried snacks, which was great. Somyeon noodles and other items that go well with mulhoe were also on offer, so we could take as much as we needed. My son was way more into the self bar than the mulhoe itself, haha.

Going to a mulhoe restaurant with a kid, the biggest worry is always "what do I feed them?" — but Ppwang Mulhoe took that worry off my plate. My son grabbed tteokbokki, fried snacks, and side dishes and ate really well. For anyone searching for a Pohang mulhoe spot to visit with kids, the self bar is a pretty big plus.

Squid mulhoe and half-and-half mulhoe, 20,000 won each

Squid mulhoe and half-and-half mulhoe served at Ppwang Mulhoe

The mulhoe finally arrived! We ordered one squid mulhoe and one half-and-half mulhoe. The half-and-half lets you try squid and flounder in one bowl, priced at ₩20,000. Squid mulhoe on its own is also listed at ₩20,000.

Half-and-half mulhoe piled generously with raw fish

As you can tell from the photos, they piled the raw fish on generously. Squid was chewy while the flounder had a comparatively soft texture, so eating them together, you really noticed the contrast — and I liked that.

The half-and-half is perfect for anyone torn between "squid mulhoe or flounder mulhoe?" Mix the seasoning, vegetables, and fish together, add cold broth for a refreshing finish, and toss in somyeon noodles or rice — it makes for a really filling meal.

Mulhoe mixed with broth poured in

I'm usually pretty weak with spicy food, and the seasoning was a bit spicy for my taste. My husband, on the other hand, kept saying how delicious it was and ate it right up, lol. So if you're sensitive to spice, I'd recommend tasting as you go instead of pouring in a lot of broth all at once, adjusting to your liking.

Fried squid at 15,000 won: the side to order with it

And here's what I personally enjoyed the most — the fried squid! If we'd only had the mulhoe, we'd have missed out. Currently priced at ₩15,000, and the squid pieces themselves were pretty thick.

Cross-section of thick fried squid

I thought thick squid might turn out chewy, but not at all — the inside was tender while still keeping that distinctive squid texture. The batter outside was super crispy. "Crispy outside, tender inside" fits this fried squid perfectly.

Taking a bite of mulhoe and then a crunchy piece of fried squid made for a great combo, and it was good to eat with a kid too. Of everything we had, the fried squid is what I'd order again on a repeat visit.

Having visited in person, what stuck with me about Ppwang Mulhoe is that it's not just a place for mulhoe — it's a spot where everyone from kids to adults can eat comfortably together. Adults get a hearty mulhoe loaded with squid and flounder, while kids can pick what they like from the self bar, which made it a solid lunch spot during our family trip.
