What kind of place is Deokjane Bangatgan near Sinnonhyeon Station?
Today I'm bringing you my review of Deokjane Bangatgan (덕자네방앗간) near Sinnonhyeon Station. I love tteokbokki (spicy rice cake stew), so I'd wanted to try this place whenever I was in the Gangnam area. I heard they make the rice cakes fresh in-store every morning, so I was curious what their garaetteok (thick cylindrical rice cake) tteokbokki would taste like.
So let me walk you through the atmosphere, the menu lineup, and my honest thoughts on the food I actually tried. Preview below⬇️

Weekend evening at Deokjane Bangatgan: atmosphere and wait time

The inside of Deokjane Bangatgan was spacious and clean. There were seats for eating alone as well as tables for groups, and since it's an open kitchen, you could watch the food being prepared.
I visited on a weekend evening and it was packed! There can be a wait on weekday lunches or weekends, so keep that in mind if you're planning a visit.
Deokjane Bangatgan menu and what we ordered for ₩18,000

🔼Click to enlarge The menu had a wide range of snack dishes — tteokbokki, vegetable bibim mandu (mixed dumplings), fried snacks, sundae, gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and more. There were also solid set menus for trying several things together.
I ordered: Tteokbokki ₩6,000 Sundae ₩6,000 Fried snacks ₩6,000 😀

Here it comes-!
Garaetteok tteokbokki: potato salad topping and spice level

I started with the garaetteok tteokbokki, Deokjane Bangatgan's signature dish. It came with a scoop of potato salad on top of big, plump rice cakes. The rice cakes were noticeably thicker than the usual wheat tteok or thin rice tteok.
Taking a bite, I could really feel that chewy texture unique to garaetteok, and the sauce was spicy-sweet with a rich depth. Because the rice cake was so thick, the texture really came through when eaten together with the sauce.

Mixing the potato salad on top slightly into the tteokbokki sauce added a soft, nutty flavor from the potato, giving it a whole different feel.
It was spicier than I expected, so if you can't handle spicy tteokbokki well, I'd recommend mentioning that when you order!
Chewy sundae — is there any organ meat?

Deokjane Bangatgan's chewy sundae was ₩6,000, and I ordered it to eat alongside the tteokbokki. True to its chewy style, it had a clean, mild flavor, which made it good for dipping into the tteokbokki sauce.

It was fine eaten on its own, but dipping it lightly in the tteokbokki broth suited it well. There was no organ meat mixed in!
What comes in the assorted fried snacks, and how they taste
Deokjane Bangatgan's assorted fried snacks came with several kinds together — kimmari (seaweed-wrapped glass noodle rolls), squid, mandu (dumplings), and fish cake. The fried items were crispy outside and moist inside, and with so many varieties it was fun to pick through one by one.

The kimmari in particular was packed full of glass noodles inside, giving it a satisfying bite, and the fried fish cake also went well with the tteokbokki.

Dipping the fried snacks lightly into the tteokbokki sauce too, the spicy-sweet flavor paired well with the savoriness of the fried batter.
Is Deokjane Bangatgan worth eating in? Final verdict
Deokjane Bangatgan is a tteokbokki restaurant that anyone who loves thick garaetteok absolutely has to try!! Since the rice cakes are apparently made fresh every morning, the texture was noticeably different from typical tteokbokki, and the combination of chewy garaetteok with the spicy-sweet sauce was really good.
Beyond the tteokbokki, you can also order basic snack dishes like sundae and fried snacks, which made it great for sharing several dishes. If you're near Sinnonhyeon Station or Gangnam looking for garaetteok tteokbokki or a good snack restaurant, I'd recommend giving Deokjane Bangatgan a visit.💕
