Pohang mulhoe restaurant with sunset window ocean-view seats: Ppwang

In short

Ppwang Mulhoe is a mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup) specialist on Haean-ro in Pohang, just across the road from Yeongildae Beach. At Ppwang Mulhoe the signature bowl comes with abalone, sea cucumber, squid and sea squirt, eaten at an ocean-view window seat at sunset with unlimited self-bar side dishes and squid radish soup, then finished the local way: mixed (bibim) first, then noodles, then rice. It is a good stop for a cold bowl of mulhoe alongside a walk by the Pohang sea.

After a drive out to Yeongildae Beach in Pohang, I went looking for a cool mulhoe (cold raw seafood soup) spot with East Sea vibes and ended up trying the Ppwang mulhoe loaded with abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt. I heard the Ppwang mulhoe uses a secret gochujang sauce blended with green onion, cucumber and pear, so I was pretty excited going in. If you're hunting for a mulhoe restaurant in Pohang, pay attention to "Ppwang Mulhoe."

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, and where do you park?

Ppwang Mulhoe sits facing Pohang's Yeongildae Beach, greeting you with a cute squid character at the door. You can park right in front of the restaurant, and if the spots are full, there's a public parking lot for the beach just across the street. (The back alley is blocked, so make sure you come in from the coastal road!) It's right across the street, so it's super close — and it's perfect for a walk by the sea to digest after your meal.

Inside Ppwang Mulhoe: private room and baby chairs

Inside, Ppwang Mulhoe is spacious with a pink-toned concept, big tables, and plenty of seats. There's a private room too, so it's great for work dinners or group gatherings — in fact, in the evening a lot of people were there having a drink. I was surprised to see quite a few foreign visitors too! There are baby chairs as well, so it's great for family meals, and it's a really nice spot to eat at when you're visiting Pohang, like I was.

Sunset from the ocean-view window seat

The weather was great, and I got a window seat with an ocean view through the floor-to-ceiling windows — watching the sunset was so healing, and Pohang's weather was just insanely good that day, so I was super happy. It seems like it'd be nice to enjoy the terrace once it cools down, too — the seat alone made me really happy with the whole place!

What's on the Ppwang Mulhoe self bar?

Ppwang Mulhoe's self bar is unlimited, so you can enjoy as much as you want, and there's a wide variety of side dishes to go with your meal. There's tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) and chicken nuggets too, so it's great for kids — and did you catch that they even have squid radish soup ready? Nice touch!

Since rice comes with the mulhoe order, I brought over a bowl of side dishes and squid radish soup to go with it.

Ppwang Mulhoe menu and kiosk ordering

You order and prepay at the kiosk at your table, so you just check the menu and order what you're craving. There's squid mulhoe, cheonggajami (flounder) mulhoe, half-and-half mulhoe, and Ppwang mulhoe (abalone, sea cucumber, squid, sea squirt), plus hoe-deopbap (raw fish rice bowl), sliced raw fish, and special dishes. They say Ppwang Mulhoe has squid 365 days a year, so you can get squid sashimi, squid mulhoe, whole steamed squid, and fried squid — good to know if you're craving squid! It's known for fresh, varied raw fish and seafood, so just order whatever you're in the mood for.

How to eat Ppwang mulhoe: start by mixing it

Start with bibim (mixed) first! It's delicious just mixed with the gochujang sauce, and you add the broth to taste after that. Add a little minced chili or wasabi from the self bar for a spicy, tingly kick — enjoy it however you like!

How the abalone, sea cucumber, squid and sea squirt taste

Mulhoe just tastes right eaten with a spoon, doesn't it?! It's so refreshing and packed with savory depth that I couldn't stop — the combo of abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt is a work of art~ Loaded with plenty of fresh seafood, so the texture is great, and the broth is sweet with a flavor that fills your whole mouth — you really should try it at least once~~~ It's still hot out, so having a cool bowl of mulhoe while enjoying the Pohang sea is honestly so romantic and nice!!!

Noodles added to the mulhoe
Rice mixed into the remaining mulhoe for the finish

Mixed, then noodles, then rice: the three-course finish

Drop in the noodles and you get a cool, chewy combo, then add rice and mix it all together for the perfect finish~ Go through all three courses — "bibim → noodles → rice" — and you'll really feel the true charm of Ppwang Mulhoe, and pairing it with the side menu makes for an even more filling, satisfying meal. If you want a cool, chewy squid mulhoe as your must-do Pohang course, come properly enjoy the East Sea at the mulhoe restaurant "Ppwang Mulhoe"!
