Gyeongju hanok Korean restaurant, jjimdak and two rice swaps: Dongyang
In short
Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in a preserved hanok on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Lunch was a medium five-color vegetable jjimdak (chicken braised in soy sauce), with beef tartare rice and ttaengcho rice (spicy pepper rice) ordered instead of plain rice; the jjimdak was boneless and spicy with chili oil, and came loaded with potato, corn, eggplant, broccoli, lotus root and glass noodles. For a Korean meal with parents or older family while traveling in Gyeongju, Dongyang Baekban is a safe choice.

Had lunch at 'Dongyang Baekban Main Branch,' a famous Korean restaurant in Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil. It started back in 2019 and has since gotten so popular it's opened branches in other regions! Here's my review after a hearty lunch of vegetable jjimdak, beef tartare rice, and land-mine rice.

Where is Dongyang Baekban? Near Hwangnam Market and Skunkworks
Dongyang Baekban, a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil, sits near Skunkworks café and Hwangnam Market. Close to the main street, so it's easy to drop by! With chicken jeongol (hot pot), jjimdak, dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken), and kimchi duruchigi on the menu, it's a good pick to visit with older family members.

This is the entrance to the restaurant!
It's run as a restaurant while keeping the original hanok (traditional Korean house) intact.

Inside the hanok: how many seats does Dongyang Baekban have?
Inside, this Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant has a clean, modern vibe. Close the door and you can even use it privately. There are 3 tables for two and 3 tables for four.

The side dishes that come with the meal
Four neatly arranged banchan (side dishes) come out along with a bowl of seaweed flakes for mixing. The diced radish kimchi is great with the rice soup!

The medium five-color vegetable jjimdak comes already cooked.

Beef tartare rice and ttaengcho rice instead of plain rice
Instead of plain rice, we tried beef tartare rice and land-mine rice.

The beef tartare rice comes with a hunk of seasoned raw beef, sprinkled with nutty perilla seed powder. We mixed it into the big bowl of rice with seaweed flakes. The beef was fresh and the sesame oil flavor was great. Hwangridan-gil is full of beef tartare bibimbap places, and Dongyang Baekban lets you enjoy a mini version too! It also pairs really well with the jjimdak sauce, haha 😆

My friend picked the land-mine rice, topped with what they call gochujang broth and minced chili. It's chili minced with anchovy, so it's spicy and salty at once. Pretty spicy, so if you can't handle heat, skip this one 🌶️ Mixed together, though, my friend said it really woke up your appetite.
Medium five-color vegetable jjimdak: taste and portion size
The medium five-color vegetable jjimdak arrives already cooked, so you can dig in right away. They also simmered it more for us to reduce the sauce.
It's a soy-sauce jjimdak made spicy with chili oil. Mildly spicy and delicious. It's boneless, so it's easy to eat!

Once you portion it onto your plate, you can see just how packed it is. Potato, corn, eggplant, broccoli, lotus root, and more toppings, plus plenty of glass noodles — you probably don't even need to add extra 👍 The boneless chicken is moist and well seasoned, so tasty!

It's great eaten with rice too. The spicy sauce makes you eat way more rice than usual. The jjimdak portion is quite large, so even without ordering any sides, we were completely full!
The restrooms are gender-separated.

For anyone visiting Gyeongju and looking for a Korean restaurant, I recommend 'Dongyang Baekban Main Branch,' a Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant.
