Returning to Jeju Samchun, a favorite during our month-long stay
Whenever we come to Jeju, black pork is an absolute must, right? During our month-long stay in Hamdeok last year, my family completely fell for a favorite place we visited all the time—the quality of the meat, the atmosphere, everything. It was Jeju Samchun (제주삼춘), a Jocheon favorite that is well known even among Jeju locals.

This time, when the whole family came back to Jeju after a year, there was zero hesitation—we headed straight to Jeju Samchun, our top pick for black pork near Hamdeok Beach.

A renovated interior and comfortable dining space
It had been a while, so even the familiar exterior was such a lovely welcome—but the moment we opened the door, we were surprised. The entire interior had been renovated over the past year, and it had become much more modern and atmospheric.
The ventilation was excellent, so there was none of that stuffy feeling from grilling smoke or smells, and the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the garden made the space feel even fresher. And when dining out as a family, bathrooms are one of the things you pay the most attention to, right? Even the restroom was spotless and stylishly designed; I was impressed when I took the kids to wash their hands.

Ordering the Samchun Set and black pork kimchi stew
Seeing all that delicious meat aging made us so hungry. Haha. My family ordered the signature Samchun Set along with black pork kimchi stew for a generous meal. Soon, thick cuts of aged black pork arrived with a neatly arranged table spread. I even loved the divided plates!
One of this place's biggest strengths is the incredible range of sauces provided for the meat. There was clean salt that brings out black pork's nutty flavor, pungent fresh wasabi that cuts through the richness, Jeju meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) bubbling on the grill with deep umami and no fishiness, galchi sokjeot (fermented hairtail innards), shiitake wasabi, and more. Dipping each bite into a different sauce was so fun that we just kept eating the meat endlessly.
The kind staff grilled all the meat for us carefully from start to finish! Going to a barbecue restaurant with little kids can leave you scrambling to turn the meat and look after everyone, but the professionals cooked everything to just the right doneness. The whole family could relax, chat, and focus entirely on our meal.

The staff also kindly explained which sauce combinations suited each cut best, and thoughtfully brought more side dishes whenever we needed them. It really felt like being looked after.

Enjoying aged black pork with sauce combinations
For our first bite of golden-brown black pork, we gave it a light dip in salt. The moment I chewed, nutty juices burst across my mouth, with no off smell at all—and that wonderful crisp-outside, juicy-inside chew.

Of all the sauces, my personal favorite was the breadcrumb salt! The ogyeopsal (five-layer pork belly), with its perfect balance of fat and lean meat, was wonderfully chewy when dipped generously in the slowly simmered meljeot. The umami was unreal.

Whenever it started to feel a little rich, adding fresh wasabi left a refreshing, clean finish. The seasoned cucumber and scallion salad were also completely different from the usual barbecue restaurant versions, which I loved.
The kids found the meat moist, tender, and not chewy at all, so they happily ate every piece we placed over their rice.

Black pork kimchi stew that paired beautifully with the meat
And the black pork kimchi stew—something you simply cannot skip with grilled meat—came in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot) packed generously with large, tender pieces of black pork and deeply aged kimchi. The depth of the broth was on another level.

It was not heavy or muddy, but pleasantly spicy, rich, and refreshing, neatly balancing the fatty meat. I mixed a bowl of rice into the stew broth, topped it with a piece of meat, and kept reaching for more even when I was full. Hahaha.
Even after a year, everything was as excellent as ever: the quality meat, friendly grilling service, varied sauces, and even the sleek, clean renovated interior and restroom. Memories of our month-long stay came flooding back, and the whole family ended the evening full and happy.
