Gansuk-dong lunch spot with pottery-bowl sundaeguk: Gukdam, Incheon
In short
Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch is a sundaeguk (pork and blood sausage soup) restaurant in Gansuk-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, in an alley across from Olive Department Store. Two diners visited on a weekday morning before the lunch rush and ordered the special sundaeguk, which came in a huge pottery-style earthen bowl packed with chewy sundae, lean pork and offal, in a broth that was clear and deep like galbitang rather than milky pork soup. With parking right in front of the shop and free banchan refills at the self-serve bar, Gukdam Sundaeguk works just as well for a workday lunch or a team meal.

It's gotten a bit cooler in the mornings and evenings lately, but I still find myself craving hot soup constantly. Especially on days when I'm a little tired or skipped breakfast, a bowl of sundaeguk (blood sausage soup) for lunch is so satisfying, haha. This time I had an errand at a nearby hospital on a weekday morning, so before lunch hour hit I stopped by Gukdam Sundaeguk, a well-known spot in Gansan-dong. Two of us went and ordered the special sundaeguk — the meat portion was more generous than I expected, and the broth was a bit different from typical sundaeguk, more like a rich, deep stock. We ate every bit of it happily.
Where Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch is and when to go

Gukdam Sundaeguk is located in Gansan-dong. If you walk into the alley just across from Olive Department Store, the restaurant appears right away. We went on a weekday morning, before the real lunch rush started. Sundaeguk places tend to get chaotic when office workers pour in at lunchtime. I like to visit a little early when I can, so I can eat at a relaxed pace, and this time too we got there before the peak and had a comfortable meal.

Parking in Gansuk-dong: space right in front of Gukdam Sundaeguk
There's no dedicated parking lot, but you can park right in front of the restaurant, and there were a few spots available in the alley too.

When we arrived there was space, so we parked comfortably right in front of the store 🚙 When looking for a place to eat in Gansan-dong, taste matters, but so does whether you can park nearby. Especially when bringing parents along or dining with a group, if there's no parking it makes you hesitate even if the food is good — but here, being able to park right out front made things easy.
It's located near Sangincheon Elementary School across from Olive Department Store, and since the Forena the Sharp Incheon City Hall Station apartment complex is currently under construction nearby, there's extra room in the alley right now.
Inside Gukdam Sundaeguk: dining room and seating

Walking into Gukdam Sundaeguk, the space was much bigger than I expected. You might picture sundaeguk restaurants as slightly old-fashioned neighborhood spots, but Gukdam Sundaeguk was bright and well-kept overall, which made a good first impression.

The tables weren't cramped at all, and beyond seating for 2-4 people, there were also spots suited for larger groups. We came as two, but I thought this place would work fine for coming with coworkers too.

It looked like a solid choice for a bigger lunch gathering or eating all at once with colleagues.

The air conditioning was blasting, which was perfect for eating a hot soup. The temperature was exactly right 😁
Gukdam Sundaeguk menu board and self-serve banchan bar

Here's the Gukdam Sundaeguk menu board. Since sundaeguk is the main dish, it's front and center, with suyuk (boiled pork), Korean beef tripe hot pot, and grilled Korean beef tripe as the other simple options. A lineup befitting a proper tripe and sundaeguk restaurant.

You can refill banchan (side dishes) and chili paste/flakes at the self-serve bar 😍 So great.

There's savory sungnyung (scorched rice tea) offered for dessert, so you can finish off your soup meal with something warm.
Special sundaeguk served in a pottery-style earthen bowl

The special sundaeguk arrived. See how much green onion is scattered on top? What's unusual is that the stone bowl here wasn't the typical soup bowl — it was bigger, more like pottery. The bowl itself felt novel 😁 Somehow it made the food look even more appetizing. I was a bit taken aback by how full the bowl was, but since we'd been fasting since the night before, we calmly started digging in.

The sundaeguk had chewy sausage, meat, and offal in it, and there was really a lot of meat. The broth also felt clear, giving it a slight galbitang vibe 👍

As expected of a well-known spot in Gansan-dong, the side dishes were solid too, better than I expected. Being a dedicated sundaeguk restaurant, you could tell they took the soup seriously.

I loved how much broth there was. Usually when you mix rice into the soup, the rice soaks up the broth and you're left eating without much liquid, making you wish you could add more — but Gukdam Sundaeguk gave a generous amount, which was great for someone like me who loves broth.

It seemed to already have a light touch of salt seasoning, so it tasted good without needing to season it further.

The lean meat pieces were tender — not tough, not dry, just easy to eat. I really love sundaeguk and have tried it in a lot of places, and Gukdam Sundaeguk stood out a bit with a genuinely rich broth.

The broth was amazing — it didn't have that pork smell you usually associate with sundaeguk, just clean and deep flavor.
There was also plenty of tender offal in it, which felt like a good protein boost 🤣
How much lean pork you get in the special sundaeguk
When I eat sundaeguk, I pay a lot of attention to the meat inside. If there's too much fat or the offal texture is too strong, I tend to leave some behind bit by bit. But the special sundaeguk at Gukdam Sundaeguk had a good proportion of lean meat, which I liked. Every spoonful kept turning up more meat, so the portion was generous — ordering the special version was worth it 👍 The lean meat wasn't too dry either, well-soaked in broth, so it went great with rice.

The chewy sundae (blood sausage) is also a treat. Best saved for last, haha.
Why Gukdam's broth tastes like galbitang, not milky pork soup
What stuck with me most here was the broth. When you think of sundaeguk, you usually picture a milky, heavy broth simmered for a long time from pork bones — but the broth at Gukdam Sundaeguk tasted deep and rich, a bit like galbitang. That said, it wasn't an overpowering, heavy-scented style. It had real depth from properly extracted meat stock, with a relatively clean finish, so I kept going back for more spoonfuls.

I remember taking the first spoonful and thinking, huh, this broth is actually really good. It had the deep flavor characteristic of sundaeguk without any off-putting gamey smell, so I think even people who aren't huge sundaeguk fans could eat it comfortably.
Spooning rice with a piece of lean meat on top is, as always, the best combo 👍 Rather than pouring all the rice in at once, I like to eat about half separately and mix in the rest partway through. With the rice slightly softening in the rich broth alongside the meat, it made for a properly hearty meal. Maybe because we'd been out and about since the morning, the warm broth tasted even better, haha.

Is Gukdam Sundaeguk good for a workday lunch or team meal?
Sundaeguk really does seem like a great lunch option. For the price of one meal you get broth, meat, and rice all together, and once you finish a bowl you feel full well into the afternoon. In particular, the special sundaeguk we had came with plenty of lean meat, so if you like meat, ordering the special over the regular seems worth it. Since it's a meal dish, turnover is relatively quick, and the spacious dining room looked good for a group of coworkers eating together. On a day when it's hard to decide what to eat for lunch as a group, sundaeguk seems like a safe pick that most people wouldn't dislike.

Visiting Gukdam Sundaeguk with two of us before the weekday lunch rush, what I personally liked most was the generous lean meat and deep broth flavor. Even though it's sundaeguk, the rich, clean stock reminded me a bit of galbitang, so we drank a lot of broth right to the end. The space is also spacious and clean, making it good for a simple meal for two, but also easy to use as a spot for a bigger office lunch or group meal.

On top of that, there's parking right in front, which is convenient for anyone driving. If you're craving a warm, filling meal and looking for a good restaurant in Gansan-dong, Incheon, it might be worth trying a bowl of the special sundaeguk at Gukdam Sundaeguk :)
