Gansuk-dong sundaeguk restaurant, soju with salted shrimp: Gukdam
In short
Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch is a tidy sundaeguk (pork and blood sausage soup) restaurant in an alley within walking distance of Exit 5 of Gansuk-ogeori Station in Gansuk-dong, Namdong, Incheon. Dining alone, the writer ordered a half plate of suyuk (boiled pork) with the restaurant's homemade salted shrimp and a glass of soju, followed by sundaeguk whose clear, galbitang-like broth was already well seasoned without any chilli paste. Gukdam Sundaeguk is an easy choice for a solo meal or a get-together with friends.

Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, a restaurant worth visiting in Gansuk-dong, Incheon
As the weather turns chilly, guk-bap (soup with rice) is the food that comes to mind naturally. Honestly, I'm someone who loves a bowl of guk-bap with a shot of soju more than almost anything. Today, while I was in Incheon, I stopped by Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, a well-known spot in Gansuk-dong, Incheon.
The chillier it gets, the more you need to look after your health, so I recommend having a warm meal even if it's just one. I'm a Korean-food person at heart, so a bowl of guk-bap is precious to me, but I notice a lot of people these days just grab something quick instead ㅠ
How to get to Gukdam Sundaeguk from Gansuk-ogeori Station Exit 5
Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, a restaurant in Gansuk-dong, Incheon, sits in a clean alley walkable from Exit 5 of Gansuk-ogeori Station in Incheon.

The interior is very tidy. The owner and staff are also super friendly.

Gukdam Sundaeguk menu: sundaeguk and the new gopchang jeongol
Gukdam Sundaeguk in Gansuk-dong, Incheon simmers its broth from dawn every day and prepares boiled meat along with homemade barley ssamjang and kkakdugi. The main dish is sundaeguk, but it looks like they've also launched gopchang jeongol, which sounds perfect for chilly days! I'll have to try that next time!!

You can order right away using the tablet at each table.

Basic banchan (side dishes) are provided, and if you need more, you can grab them from the self-serve bar. Just as tidy as the store's interior, the self-serve bar was neatly organized too, which I liked. Taste matters, but I also really appreciate places that clearly pay attention to hygiene!

Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, a restaurant in Gansuk-dong, Incheon, even has baby tableware ready for guests dining with children.

Table setting at Gukdam Sundaeguk: chilled heotgae tea and cutlery
As soon as I sat down, they brought out chilled heotgae tea~ Seeing the heotgae tea, I figured I should have a soju too... haha. The water was so good I think I drank the whole bottle!

Just as hygienic as my first impression of the place, the utensil set was also nicely prepared.

Banchan: homemade kkakdugi and barley ssamjang
The basic banchan at Gukdam Sundaeguk, a restaurant worth visiting in Gansuk-dong, Incheon, is simple and clean. Homemade kkakdugi and barley ssamjang, plus peppers. By the way, cheongyang peppers (spicy Korean green chili) are available at the self-serve bar, so grab some if you need them.

Half-plate suyuk: why it suits a solo meal with soju
One reason solo diners like me should visit Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch is that they offer a half-plate suyuk on the menu, great for when sundaeguk alone feels like it's not quite enough.

They also serve homemade salted shrimp alongside it, and this salted shrimp is a total game changer!!

Not salty at all, with a rich savory flavor — the combination of salted shrimp and suyuk practically calls for soju.

In the end, another soju today.

Gukdam's sundaeguk: a clear broth that tastes like galbitang
The sundaeguk at Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, a restaurant worth visiting in Gansuk-dong, Incheon, is quite special. It wasn't the sundaeguk you'd normally imagine.

The sundaeguk-bap at Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch comes out piping hot in a ttukbaegi (earthenware pot), packed with a good amount of ingredients. This sundaeguk-bap, a Gansuk-dong restaurant staple, uses only sundae (blood sausage) and head meat. I took a first sip of the broth and it tasted almost like galbitang (short rib soup)? A completely clear sundaeguk~ They gave salted shrimp and dadaegi (spicy seasoning) on the side, but there was no need to add anything at all — the seasoning was already just right!

It only has sundae and head meat in it, but the amount of meat is quite generous. Every scoop is loaded with meat, and it's tender and delicious too!

The sundaeguk-bap paired well with the well-fermented, homemade kkakdugi from Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch. Not the sundaeguk-bap flavor you'd usually expect, but one with a clear, galbitang-like broth. As a restaurant worth visiting in Gansuk-dong, Incheon, Gukdam Sundaeguk Main Branch, with its clean interior, is great for solo diners and just as good for bonding with friends.
