Suwan District sundae-guk restaurant with mushroom broth: Sinjuokmi
In short
Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is a sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) restaurant in the Suwan District food alley of Gwangsan, Gwangju. The writer ordered gat sundae-guk and sanghwang gat sundae-guk made with sanghwang mushroom, plus a half plate of handmade assorted sundae on the side, and the sanghwang soup arrived with a faint yellow broth and a deep, tonic-like flavor. With a tidy self-serve side dish bar as well, Sinjuokmi is a solid pick for a filling lunch in Suwan District.

I've been craving Korean food a lot lately! Today I'm bringing you a review of Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch, a hearty gukbap (soup with rice) spot winning over the taste buds of everyone with its deep, clean broth. It's only been open in the Suwan District food alley for a little while, but it was really clean and delicious 🥹🥹
Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch

What kind of place is Sinjuokmi in the Suwan District food alley?
I'm usually a huge fan of a hearty, satisfying gukbap, and Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch is also famous as a Blue Ribbon Survey pick, combining cleanliness with deep flavor — perfect for a solid hangover cure or a proper meal ⭐️

A clean interior with none of the usual gukbap-shop smell
The first thing I noticed the moment I walked in was how really clean the interior was — none of that heaviness or smell you usually associate with gukbap shops, just a sleek and hygienically managed space where I could sit down happily!!!
The space is also spacious and pleasant, making it a great atmosphere for a Korean food lunch gathering in Suwan District, eating solo, or stopping by casually with family 👍

Sinjuokmi's self-serve side dish bar and what the writer ordered
After sitting down and getting the basic table setting, I checked out the self-serve side dish bar set up on one side of the restaurant. The diced radish kimchi and kimchi, seasonings, and vegetables that matter most when eating gukbap were all arranged very cleanly and hygienically. Being able to refill as much as I wanted without feeling awkward made it even more satisfying 😋
We ordered the restaurant's signature gat sundae-guk and the health-packed sanghwang gat sundae-guk respectively. Looking at the menu, a dish called glutinous rice scorched-rice sundae-guk, which looked crispy and nutty, also caught my eye — I'm really curious what that combination tastes like, so I'll definitely have to try it on my next visit ☺️☺️

Handmade assorted sundae half plate: how much you get and how it tastes
The handmade assorted sundae half plate, ordered as a side to go with the soup, showed up too.

Even as a half plate, the portion wasn't disappointing at all and was served cleanly. Unlike mass-produced sundae, the glass noodles, vegetables, and casing were harmoniously balanced, giving a nutty, soft texture with every bite that was truly excellent 👍

This place is seriously good for sundae, so everyone should definitely try it ㅠㅠㅠ 🧡🧡

There's regular sundae and spicy sundae, plus lung and liver, all evenly included. The lung, which I love, was also so soft 👍
How was the sanghwang gat sundae-guk broth?
The sanghwang gat sundae-guk, made with sanghwang mushroom, had a distinctly subtle yellow broth color from the start, and the moment I drank it, I felt a deep flavor that made me healthier — a true tonic sundae-guk.

It felt like it was warmly protecting my stomach, so it would be really great to order for my parents if I bring them here ✨ Even the smell alone was like a proper tonic food 👍👍

There was a generous amount of sundae and meat, which was a bit too much for me, so I shared some with my partner haha

Add only a little dadaegi (spicy chili paste)
If you want it a bit spicier, adding dadaegi like this works well too! Even though this isn't the spicy version of sundae-guk, it already came out slightly spicy, so you don't need to add much haha

Is Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch worth a visit?
From the rich broth full of care to the clean interior, the tidy self-serve bar, and the side dishes, this was a Suwan District restaurant that satisfied me on every front. With Chuseok holiday coming up, it also seems like a wonderful place to share a hearty, warm bowl of tonic sundae-guk and enjoy proper Korean food with family gathered together after a long time 💛💛
If you want to experience a rich, comforting gukbap and proper sundae in Suwan District, or if you're looking for a hearty lunch, definitely stop by Sinjuokmi Suwan District branch ✨✨
