Fried chicken takeout in Jayang Market with a wine stop: Mr.

In short

Mr. Kim's Chicken Jayang Market Branch is a takeout fried chicken spot inside Jayang Market in Gwangjin, Seoul, that starts frying only after you order. While waiting about 10 minutes for a whole bone-in fried chicken and 10 drumsticks, there's just enough time to shop for fruit in the market and pick up wine at the Saemaul Gupanjang store right in front. The fried chicken is clean and mild, the drumsticks are salty-sweet and pair surprisingly well with wine, making this an easy combo to fit into a market run.

A Mr. Kim's Chicken run followed by a wine haul at Saemaul Gupanjang — a little Jayang Market outing.

Do you like wandering around markets? 😊 I really do.

I love looking at fresh fruit and vegetables — seeing seasonal, natural produce just puts me in a good mood, and buying healthy food feels great too. So whenever I'm out running errands and have a little extra time, I like to weave a market into my route and take a stroll around. Usually I end up stocking up on fruit, but this time I wasn't there to shop — I stopped by to pick up chicken from Mr. Kim's Chicken inside Jayang Market.

Let me tell you about how I stopped by Jayang Market and ended up picking up warm chicken, doing some grocery shopping, and grabbing wine — all in one trip.

Mr. Kim's Chicken is located inside Jayang Market, and it's the kind of place that starts frying the moment you order, so you get to enjoy that just-fried crispiness right away. Best of all, the wait time after ordering is only about 10–15 minutes, which was just enough to wander the market in the meantime. There's a Saemaul Gupanjang store right in front, so while my chicken was frying, I browsed the market, bought some fruit, and even stopped by Saemaul Gupanjang to pick out some wine.

A Jayang Market chicken favorite, cooked to order

What I ordered was one whole bone-in fried chicken and 10 drumsticks.

I liked that this wasn't pre-fried chicken sitting around — cooking only starts once your order goes in. The oil looked clean, and the interior looked tidy too.

The origin labeling was clearly displayed too — most of the chicken was domestic, with some from Thailand and Brazil.

There was no line that day, so a 10-minute wait was all it took to pick it up — and that wait was just the right length, not too short, not too long.

Boxed chicken ready for takeout

After ordering, I quickly toured Jayang Market, bought some fruit, and even made it to Saemaul Gupanjang right in front — the time flew by. When I got home and opened the box, the crispy coating had held up perfectly, which got me excited.

Clean, mild fried chicken

I started with the fried chicken.

Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside — it really delivered on the basic charm of classic fried chicken.

What I especially liked was how clean it tasted, with no greasy or poultry smell to the frying.

Fried chicken served with a side of salt

Fried in clean oil, it had a light, fresh flavor, so I could eat several pieces without feeling heavy about it. They gave me salt on the side, and at first I tried it without any. But even without dipping it in anything, the seasoning felt just right, as if the chicken itself had been brined, and the savory flavor really came through — plenty tasty on its own. If you like your fried chicken mild and crispy rather than heavily seasoned, this is a flavor you'll enjoy.

Drumsticks with an addictive salty seasoning

Personally, though, the drumsticks left more of an impression.

I tend to prefer drumsticks over wings, and these had the seasoning worked evenly through them, giving them a bolder, saltier flavor than the plain fried chicken.

The sweet-salty balance was solid too, so after one piece, your hand naturally reaches for another. I especially thought these would be great as a drinking snack.

As it happens, I'd just picked up a few bottles of wine from Saemaul Gupanjang, and pairing them with the chicken worked really well. Meat and alcohol — is there any combination that doesn't work?

After the crispy, salty bite of the drumstick, a sip of wine cleared the palate nicely, so this is a combo that works well beyond just beer. Obviously...

Shopping for wine at Saemaul Gupanjang

Saemaul Gupanjang accepts Onnuri gift certificate discounts and is fairly well known among wine lovers.

I usually alternate between Joyang Mart and Saemaul Gupanjang when buying wine. Joyang Mart is a bit more convenient in terms of layout, runs a wider variety of wine discount events, and has a good whiskey selection too. Saemaul Gupanjang has been leaning more toward point rewards than discounts lately, which is handy when you're doing regular grocery shopping.

Each place has its own strengths, so I check what's on offer or what type of drink I need before deciding where to go. My daily white and red wine for drinking chilled at home had just run out, so I stopped by Saemaul Gupanjang and picked out a few bottles.

Being able to order chicken and use that 10-minute wait to shop for wine as well made the whole route really convenient.

The Jayang Market chicken + Saemaul Gupanjang combo, summed up

If you're coming to shop at Jayang Market, I'd recommend ordering chicken at Mr. Kim's Chicken first, browsing the market while you wait, and then picking up wine at Saemaul Gupanjang. Especially if you like wine, you can pick up a bottle to pair with tasty chicken without much of a burden — I really like this combo. 🍗🍷 This time I tried the fried chicken and drumsticks, but

next time I want to try their famous signature menu, dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken). Browsing Jayang Market, picking up tasty chicken to go, and grabbing an affordable bottle of wine at Saemaul Gupanjang — if you're ever in Jayang-dong, try pairing this route together. :)
