Hi everyone, it's Sum!

I went to dinner with Collipark at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel near Yangjae. I'm honestly not a big eel person, but this place had no fishy smell and was so mild that I ended up eating well with the side dishes too, haha.

Monday 8pm at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel: atmosphere and reservations

Exterior of Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel near Yangjae Station

We visited around 8pm on a Monday. Even on a Monday there were so many customers! Since we'd reserved ahead, we got seated right away with no wait.

Busy dining hall at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel
Spacious seating spanning two floors

The restaurant spans two floors and is fairly spacious. It seemed like a great spot for a dinner for two, but it also looked good for a group outing.

What two people ordered, and how much 1kg of eel really is

Menu board at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel

The two of us ordered 1kg of salt-grilled eel plus grilled king prawns and janchi guksu. That 1kg of eel is the pre-trim weight! Once the bones and innards are removed, the actual served portion is about 550–600g. There's also a table setting fee of ₩3,000 per person.

Complimentary eel extract drink

When we visited, they also gave us a complimentary eel extract drink each, haha.

Side dishes served alongside the eel
Chive salad and pickled perilla leaves among the side dishes

When you're eating eel, you tend to reach for the side dishes a lot too, and the banchan (side dishes) here are delicious. Whoever's cooking in the kitchen has serious skills!

If you run out of any side dish, you can grab more as needed from the self-serve bar.

Salt-grilled eel 1kg: staff grill it for you to the last piece

Look at the salt-grilled eel, 1kg of it — such a gorgeous sight, ugh.

The eel on the charcoal grill had thick, plump flesh, so my expectations were high even before it was grilled — once it was browned and cut up, each piece was so plump, haha. When we visited, a staff member grilled it for us the whole way through, so we could just relax and eat.

The eel-grilling tips posted on the restaurant wall

For anyone who wants to grill it themselves, let me share the 'eel grilling secrets' posted on the wall!

Eel-grilling instructions posted at the restaurant

1. Place the back side of the eel on the grill grate, sprinkle salt evenly, and grill for about 40 seconds.

2. Flip it over and grill for about 2–3 minutes.

3. Cut it into bite-sized pieces.

4. Stand the cut pieces up on the grill, grilling one side, then the other. Standing the cut eel up to brown it — grilling both sides is the key point.

Any fishy smell? The side dish that paired best with the eel

I'm not usually a huge eel fan, so I was a bit worried about a fishy smell while eating, but this place had none — it was mild and clean. There were a few small bones though!

Since it's salt-grilled, it also paired really well with the side dishes. My favorite combination was eel with chive salad! I tried several combinations, but chive salad suited my taste the best!

The lettuce wraps were also good, and putting eel on top of pickled perilla leaves gave it a whole different flavor! Even though it's the same salt-grilled eel, the taste changes depending on what side dish you pair it with, which made eating it fun.

Finishing with janchi guksu, and its surprising portion size

Janchi guksu (noodle soup). The noodle soup here is no joke. We ordered it to finish off after the eel, and first of all, the portion was huge — I expected a light little dessert-style serving, but it was seriously generous, haha. It wasn't just big, it tasted great too, so I was satisfied — finishing off the eel with warm noodle soup hit the spot perfectly, haha.

Generous serving of janchi guksu ordered to finish the meal

I already thought the side dishes were delicious, but after eating the janchi guksu too, I really felt the kitchen's skill shine through, haha.

So what did dinner for two cost at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel?
