Euljiro 3-ga soup restaurant, 20-minute weekday wait: Eulji Baektan
In short
Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a white-charcoal grill restaurant right outside Exit 11 of Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a weekday evening there were 3 parties ahead, and after re-registering on the waitlist and waiting more than 20 minutes, the writer sat on the 2nd floor and ordered ppyeo gamjatang (pork bone and potato soup), which had a clean broth and meat that fell straight off the bone. The one letdown at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui: rice is not sold separately.

Where is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui and what are its hours?
Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a famous charcoal-grilled bone restaurant right in front of Euljiro 3-ga Station Exit 11. It's open daily from 11:00 to 24:00 with last order at 23:00, and you can book through Naver Reservations or Catch Table.

This is a charcoal barbecue specialist serving grilled bones and grilled cuttlefish cooked over premium white charcoal. Since it's open late, there were tons of people there for company dinners, gatherings, and drinks!

How long is the weekday evening wait at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui?
On a weekday evening there were 3 parties waiting ahead of me. Here, if you don't arrive within 2 minutes of being called, your spot gets cancelled, so I'd recommend waiting right in front of the restaurant. My turn came up while I was still on my way there, so I ended up having to re-register and wait over 20 minutes before getting in, haha, ㅠㅠ!

While waiting I was trying to decide what to order, and almost every table had the baektan grilled bones! I came for a hangover cure so I planned on the ppyeo gamjatang, but the grilled bones looked so good it made the decision harder.

1st floor vs 2nd floor: which seats to take
Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is a two-story building, and the first floor was already packed and bustling. The tables are spacious and the atmosphere is great, so it's perfect if you're looking for an Euljiro pub. Even the menu has that old-school charm, mixed with a bit of retro-meets-modern style!

A sign I spotted on the way up to the second floor! Looks like this is one of those famous Euljiro spots that was even featured on the show Tasty Guys.

Upstairs there are long joined tables, so most people up there were in groups or company parties. I expected it to be hot with so many people packed in, but the air conditioning was blasting so it was actually really comfortable and cool. If the ground floor has that lively Euljiro street energy with the windows open, the second floor feels better for actually focusing on conversation.

QR code ordering, and ppyeo haejangguk at lunch
You order through the QR code on the table. I was debating the grilled bones but decided to try the ppyeo gamjatang instead!

At lunch they sell ppyeo haejangguk (bone hangover soup) and other meal options, so it seems to be popular as a lunch spot with Euljiro office workers too.

The basic side dishes that come with the meal

How the ppyeo gamjatang tastes — and why there's no rice
And here comes the dish: ppyeo gamjatang.
Over a clear broth, they stack up whole green onion, big bones, perilla leaves, ground perilla seeds, and seasoning sauce like a tower. You boil it once, then mix everything together before eating. Also, keep in mind they don't sell rice separately!
Once the gamjatang starts boiling, you mix in the seasoning sauce, perilla seeds and perilla leaves, and the once-clear broth turns rich and savory thanks to the perilla and sauce! Most of all, the broth was really clean and refreshing, perfect for curing a hangover. The spice level was moderate, about as spicy as Jin Ramen, and the perilla leaves went so well with the gamjatang that I'd recommend piling perilla leaves right on top of the meat.
The meat was really big and so tender that it separated from the bone super easily! Right after I finished filming, the meat popped right off the bone and I was genuinely surprised. There was so much meat that my friend and I got completely full eating it together, and the broth had such a nice, satisfying umami flavor that I wanted to add ramen noodles too — but I was too full, which was a bit of a shame since I couldn't have dessert.

Eating the cool cabbage together with the tender meat really clears your head! I'd also recommend pairing it with baek-kimchi (white kimchi). It's totally the kind of food that devours rice, so it was such a shame there was no rice available... It seems like rice does come with the ppyeo haejangguk at lunch, so if you're looking for a hangover soup spot in Euljiro where you can eat solo, come to Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui!

Next visit: the charcoal-grilled bones
If you're looking for a Korean restaurant near Euljiro 3-ga that's great for group gatherings and company dinners, I'd recommend Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui! This time I had the ppyeo haejangguk, but next time my goal is to try the grilled bones that literally everyone else was ordering. If it's your first visit, I'd recommend going straight for the grilled bones.
