Ulju, Ulsan café for strawberry syrup latte and a September show: MUG
In short
MUG (카페 먹) is a large bakery café in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju, Ulsan, rebuilt on an ornamental tree farm that burned down in the 2013 wildfire. Driving out from Busan, the writer ordered a MUG lemon smoothie, a strawberry syrup latte and squid ink sausage bread, then looked around the September invitational exhibition in the gallery by the entrance. With a very large parking lot, floor-to-ceiling window seats and a walking trail out back, MUG is an easy pick for a slow, healing day out.

Looking for a big healing café in Ulsan? Honestly, I love all kinds of cafés — reliable franchise spots with a proven taste, tiny neighborhood cafés that feel like my own secret hideout, and those massive suburban cafés just outside the city center. Each has its own charm. Franchise cafés are easy and trustworthy, small alley cafés feel cozy and personal, but large cafés win on sheer scale — nobody can match that — and since most of them sit just outside the city surrounded by nature, they're perfect for a healing drive.
While I was busy doing blog collaborations in Busan, I decided to drive over to Ulsan for more blog work, and while scouting for a good café I found this genuinely huge one in Ulju-gun, Ulsan. No hesitation — I typed it straight into the navigation and went. The drive itself was already wonderful; as I got closer, the green trees and nature already started calming me down. And once I arrived, the massive parking lot, the building, and the surrounding facilities gave me the full large-café experience. So let me introduce it now.

What is MUG? A large Ulju café built on land burned by a wildfire
MUG is a large bakery café in Jinae-ri, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan. The land had been used for growing ornamental trees for over 20 years until a massive wildfire wiped everything out in an instant. But instead of giving up, the owners replanted trees on the same site, laid out paths, and carefully built a café where anyone can come and rest.
MUG's concept is centered on remembering the pain of the 2013 wildfire that burned the forest, and turning that memory into a sturdy space of recovery and resilience. Kids and parents can freely run around and walk here. Being a large café, it also has special signature drinks and a huge variety of breads to enjoy. If you drive, there are plenty of nearby attractions too — Amethyst Cave Country, Jakcheonjeong Valley, Yeongnam Alps Golf Park — and it's great for kids as well.

Parking and house rules at MUG
You can see everything at once from the entrance road to MUG — the parking lot, the building, and the surroundings. Being a large café, the approach road is wide and the parking lot is enormous. Below the parking lot stretch fields and rice paddies, and behind the building sits a low hill — nature all around, which makes it very healing. This café doesn't allow pets, doesn't allow smoking, and requires active supervision of children.

The September invitational exhibition in the entrance gallery
At MUG, right past the entrance's specially designed large door is the exhibition hall. Various exhibitions rotate through regularly here. In September, there's an invitational exhibition by artist Lim Hee-jung titled 'Between Transit.' In this coffee-scented space, you get to enjoy culture along with your café time, which makes the visit feel even more meaningful.
And once you go through another door, the truly vast interior of MUG opens up.
Seating inside MUG and the floor-to-ceiling window views
The interior of MUG is decorated in a very nature-friendly style, so the atmosphere is calm and comfortable — great for resting. It's also very spacious, with wide gaps between tables, so conversation is comfortable no matter how crowded it gets. The window side is entirely floor-to-ceiling glass, giving an open, airy feeling, and the green scenery paired with the blue sky is just perfect for the eyes. ^^ There's also a walking trail behind the café, great for a stroll.

What time should you arrive for the best bread selection?
MUG is also famous as a bakery café with tons of delicious bread varieties. Even so, if you go late in the afternoon, most of the bread is already sold out, like in the photos below. So if you want to enjoy the full bread lineup, I'd recommend visiting a bit earlier. The bread really is tasty.

What we ordered: MUG lemon smoothie, strawberry syrup latte and squid ink sausage bread
MUG requires one drink per person, and there are also seasonal menu items. I ordered the black lemon smoothie, the strawberry syrup latte, and the squid-ink sausage bread. So excited~ ><

How did the drinks and bread taste?
Ha~ just look at the visuals on that squid-ink sausage bread. It already looks delicious. The squid-ink bread part is slightly sweet and the sausage is salty, a textbook sweet-and-salty combo. As for the strawberry syrup latte — I'm the kind of person who always orders a strawberry latte at any café, so I'm picky about this — and this one was really good, with enough strawberry syrup that you could actually bite into pieces of it. The black lemon smoothie, which could be called the signature drink, wasn't overwhelmingly sour, so even people worried about tartness could enjoy it — clean and easy to drink.
Is MUG in Ulju worth the drive?
MUG's concept, tied to overcoming the pain of a wildfire, carries real meaning, and you can view an exhibition and get some healing time here too — have a great time. For Eonyang café dessert, Eonyang café, dessert, I recommend MUG~ :)
