I was craving meat while in Cheongju's Techno Polis, so I stopped by Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch haha

I ended up trying aged pork belly and pork jowl, pork rind, and fried rice all in one sitting, and the lineup was better than I expected so let me introduce it lol

Where is Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch in Cheongju?
Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch sits in the Techno Polis commercial area of Songjeol-dong, Cheongju. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés nearby, so it was a convenient spot for dinner haha

The exterior looks big and bold like a proper Korean BBQ place should, and once you go inside it stretches back further than you'd expect. The interior is more spacious than it looks from the entrance, so it seemed like a good fit for a family meal or a group visit lol

Inside Baeksan Hwarro: table extractors and the wrap vegetable self-bar
Inside Baeksan Hwarro Songjeol Branch, every table has its own grill plate and individual ventilation duct installed above it. At Korean BBQ places the smoke can be a real hassle since your clothes end up smelling afterward, but with the smoke pulled up right from above, it was definitely more comfortable haha

On one side of the restaurant there's also a self-serve bar where you can grab wrap vegetables and sauces. You can take as much lettuce, perilla leaves, and peppers as you want, which is great news for anyone who loves piling on big wraps with their meat lol

On the wall there was also signage explaining that all the meat is aged in-house at Baeksan Hwarro. It really drove home that this is a restaurant built around aged meat haha

Baeksan Hwarro menu and prices
The menu was quite varied, including aged pork belly and aged pork jowl along with scored pork neck, scored pork cheek, salt-grilled pork, and pork rind.

The small mixed platter is 530g for ₩43,000, and the large mixed platter is 750g for ₩63,000, so you can also try several cuts at once. For meal items, they had kimchi cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew), barley kimchi fried rice, water naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon, and steamed egg haha
This time I ordered 200g of aged pork jowl for ₩15,000, 200g of aged pork belly for ₩15,000, 150g of scored pork rind for ₩8,900, and barley kimchi fried rice for ₩6,900.

The total came to ₩45,800 lol

How do the aged pork jowl and aged pork belly taste?
Baeksan Hwarro's aged pork jowl was quite thick-cut, so it looked appetizing right from the start haha. When the meat came out, king oyster mushrooms, cheongyang peppers, and garlic came along too, ready to go on the grill.
Cooking it slowly on the grill, the outside turned golden brown while the juices stayed locked in inside. The pork jowl's signature light yet chewy texture really came through, and personally I liked it a lot lol

The pork belly had a good ratio of fat to lean meat, giving it a nice savory flavor. The king oyster mushrooms were sliced thick too, and grilling them in the pork fat made for a real treat haha. It was good just dipped lightly in salt, but also fun to switch it up with ssamjang (dipping sauce) or wasabi for variety.
What side dishes come with the meat?
The side dishes were more varied than expected too. They came with baek-kimchi (white kimchi), garlic, ssamjang, sauces, and even macaroni salad haha. Adding a bit of baek-kimchi between bites of meat cleared the palate each time, so I kept reaching for it lol

Finishing with barley kimchi fried rice, 6,900 won
Once you've had your fill of meat, you can't skip the fried rice haha. Baeksan Hwarro's barley kimchi fried rice comes out generously on a wide pan, topped with flying fish roe, seaweed flakes, and sesame seeds right in the middle, so it looked great from the start lol

Mixing it all together, the spicy kick of the kimchi blended with the savory seaweed flakes, and the flying fish roe added a popping texture in between bites.

I'd saved a few pieces of meat to eat alongside the fried rice, and that combo was just as good as ever haha
Is Baeksan Hwarro in Cheongju worth it?
Baeksan Hwarro Techno Polis Songjeol Branch was a great spot to mix and match aged pork jowl, pork belly, pork rind, and fried rice. If you're looking for a solid aged Korean BBQ restaurant in Cheongju's Techno Polis or a family-friendly meat spot in Songjeol-dong, it's worth a visit haha. Next time I think I'd try ordering a mixed platter to sample several cuts at once lol
