Why I chose Halal Steaks in Hongdae

Halal Steaks is a Hongdae restaurant near Hongdae serving New York-style Halal Guys-style halal food. That day I was craving something special. As I was thinking about what to eat, I suddenly wanted the halal food I used to eat at Halal Guys back in New York. Turns out there's a place near Hongdae with that exact same local vibe, so I went to pick up takeout there.

How to get to Halal Steaks from Hongik University Station

Halal Steaks is about a 7-minute walk from Hongdae Station, which was a great location. The sign is also big and easy to spot once you're almost there, so it was easy to find.

By the way, there were food photos to see right by the entrance too.

I liked that you could check the menu before even going in, so I looked it over for a bit.

Feeling excited, I headed up to the 2nd floor where the restaurant is.

What is the second-floor seating at Halal Steaks like?

The 2nd floor of Halal Steaks has a lot of seats. Seemed like a great place to come with friends or your husband or family.

There were also seats by the window, which looked great for eating alone.

Looking around, I could see the menu and food photos too.

There was also a country-of-origin sign, so it felt like a trustworthy place to eat.

What is on the kiosk menu at Halal Steaks?

Since my husband and I planned to eat this for dinner, I chose takeout and ordered at the kiosk.

Looking at the menu, the mains were Chicken Platter, Gyro Platter, Combo Platter, Falafel Platter, Clay Oven Bread Chicken Sandwich, Clay Oven Bread Gyro Sandwich, Clay Oven Bread Combo Sandwich, Clay Oven Bread Falafel Sandwich, a Single Set, and a Couple Set.

For sides there was shrimp rings, fries, secret fries, sweet potato and lamb sausage, falafel, hummus and clay oven bread, extra rice, extra vegetables, extra combo meat, extra chicken, extra gyro, and a scoop of hummus.

For dessert there was baklava, but it was sold out that day.

There were also lots of drink options, so it seemed easy to pick whatever you wanted. After going back and forth, I ordered one Chicken Platter and one Gyro Platter. The food came out quickly, and I hurried home so we could eat while it was fresh.

What comes in the takeout box: two sauces and pita bread

The Halal Steaks takeout came with two sauces each. Feeling excited, I got home and opened it up — and sure enough, they'd packed two sauces each.

And when I opened it up, there was pita bread inside too.

How was the chicken platter at Halal Steaks?

First up, the Chicken Platter.

They piled on plenty of sauce first. I added some hot sauce too and took a bite — and it tasted exactly like what I used to eat in New York. It was so delicious, and every bite brought back memories, which made me so happy. My husband ate some and said he didn't need to go to New York anymore, and he really dug in.

It was even better piled on top of pita bread. Truly a Hongdae restaurant worth the hype.

The gyro platter: beef and lamb

Next up, the Gyro Platter. This one had both beef and lamb in it.

Added sauce to this one too.

With some hot sauce on top, this one was incredible too. My husband personally prefers lamb, so he liked this one even more.

We piled this on pita bread too and mixed it up in different ways, and the two of us polished it off in no time.
