Gyeongju café with glassine-wrapped fruit mochi to go: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a fruit mochi and fruit sando dessert café on Sajeong-ro in the Hwangnidang-gil area of Gyeongju. Each mochi is wrapped one by one in colorful glassine paper, so the mochi travel well — taken out to a nearby outdoor pavilion and rest area, the rice cake skin stayed chewy and the inside was packed with cream and seasonal fruit paste. For a dessert that gets both the look and the packaging right, Tareudang is the answer.

Today I want to introduce Tareudang, an aesthetic dessert café I fell in love with at first sight during a recent trip to Gyeongju. There are countless cafés and dessert spots you have to stop by in Hwangnidang-gil, so I'm always torn on where to go, but Tareudang's uniquely refreshing, sweet dessert visuals and store atmosphere kept both my mouth and eyes happy the whole time I was there.

Where is Tareudang, and where do you park?

Tareudang sits at 49 Sajeong-ro, with excellent access to the main street of Hwangnidang-gil, so it's the perfect stop for a stroll after a meal at a nearby restaurant. That said, given the nature of Hwangnidang-gil, there's no dedicated parking for the store, so if you're driving, I recommend parking at the nearby Hwangnam-dong or Nodong public parking lots and walking over. You shouldn't have trouble finding a spot at those public lots, though on weekends or peak hours even those can fill up!

Inside Tareudang: store mood and seating

Interior of Tareudang with cozy lighting

Step through Tareudang's door and warm, cozy lighting gently wraps around the interior. Everything is kept clean and tidy, so the first impression was already satisfying. Thanks to the quiet yet sophisticated interior, it's great for a date course with a partner, or for chatting away with friends or family!

Tareudang café seating with generous spacing

The seating is spaced generously so you can relax, and the flow for takeout customers is well organized too, so I could comfortably look around the store even while waiting!

Walking slowly down the main alley of Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, you'll spot a pretty building exterior that catches your eye right away. The quiet atmosphere unique to Gyeongju blends naturally with the modern interior sensibility, and I remember being impressed from the moment I stepped up to the entrance. We got ours to go, and the packaging was so neat and pretty that you could tell the owner put a lot of care into it. Whether inside the store or at a nearby outdoor pavilion or rest area, it was perfect for enjoying dessert while getting some fresh air! As you know, the weather has been amazing lately! Grabbing Tareudang's mochi to go and heading somewhere picture-perfect with family, a partner, or friends, then taking a sweet bite — that made the whole trip feel like pure happiness!! Highly recommend.

You know the visuals scream Instagram, so photos before eating are mandatory, right? Gently opening the wrapper, you can see with your eyes alone that extreme fluffiness and chewiness somewhere between bread and rice cake.

I went straight in for a big bite. The outside is chewy yet melts softly, and the inside is packed full with sweet, savory cream and refreshing seasonal fruit filling, no gaps at all. It's not overly sweet — a clean sweetness that never gets tiring, an addictive taste taste taste!!!
