Rainy Monday mocaccino and opera cake at Waltz and Dr. Mahn, Namyangju

With my parental leave running low, I've been trying hard to take the baby on weekday drives nearby.

One place I'd passed by a few times and kept wondering about was Waltz and Dr. Mahn (왈츠와 닥터만), a well-known large café in Namyangju — so I finally went.

Not just a Bukhan River view — right on the river

This large Namyangju café isn't just about a view of the Bukhan River — it sits right on it. I don't think I've ever seen a café this close to the river before, haha. And the clean red-brick exterior gives it the feel of a stylish restaurant, too.

Parking was easy on a weekday

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is in Joan-myeon, Namyangju, right by the riverside, so driving there is convenient. Luckily there's plenty of parking, so on a weekday it was quite roomy.

Monday visit, coffee museum closed

I visited on a Monday, so unfortunately the coffee museum was closed that day. Still, the moment I stepped inside, I felt the café itself was more than enough. From hand-drip coffees to the antique coffee cups and dishware — not usually my style, but so pretty that I spent a good while just looking around.

Café, dining, and a care kids zone

Waltz and Dr. Mahn is both a premium café and a dining space, so it's broadly split into two areas. The more café-like space on the right is the care kids zone.

Since it's the care kids zone, high chairs were naturally well set up. We usually just leave the baby in the stroller, but somehow at Waltz and Dr. Mahn I wanted our little friend to feel the atmosphere too...

A rainy-day spot where the mist over the river felt extra charming

Because our table was right next to a prime spot overlooking the Bukhan River, haha. I usually dislike rainy days even when I'm just staying home, but seeing the mist hanging over the river made me think the rain actually added to the atmosphere.

From coffee to full meals

I photographed the various menu items at this recommended Namyangju large café. I'd gone in thinking of it purely as a café, but once I was there it seemed like a great spot for a proper meal too! But since we'd just had lunch, we were there for coffee — so coffee and dessert it was!

Service that felt almost fine-dining

What really made me feel this large Namyangju café was almost like fine dining was the service. Even on the order slip, the coffee items were marked so staff could tell who had ordered what.

So even though the staff member who took our order and the one who brought the coffee were different people, each drink was delivered with an explanation matched to who'd ordered it. That kind of detail really stood out to me.

Single-origin Honduras, with a choice of strength

My husband ordered a single-origin Honduras, and they gave us a description card for the beans too, which made the whole experience more fun to read through. Being able to choose the coffee's strength was also nice, since it lets you match your own caffeine preference, haha.

Torn between Vienna coffee and finally choosing a mocaccino

I was torn right up to the end between that and a Vienna coffee... but my husband, who'd ordered a black coffee for himself, kept pushing me toward the mocaccino out of curiosity, so I ended up ordering that, haha. It was delicious, but now I'm curious, so next time I'm reserving myself a Vienna coffee!

A handmade opera cake

This is the opera cake, a dessert menu item at Waltz and Dr. Mahn. I ordered it because I'd often seen it as a slice cake in other reviews, and according to the staff's explanation, it's all made in-house!

It's hard to capture the full atmosphere of this recommended large Namyangju café, which is a bit of a shame. My husband and I both felt like we were relaxing in the café lounge of an old, upscale hotel.

The cake layers weren't stuck together with chocolate syrup in a gooey way — each element seemed to sit on its own, which felt less like a flaw and more like a sign of a handmade dessert.

Would the coffee and dessert's sweetness clash?

Some of you might worry that with both the coffee and dessert being sweet, one flavor might overpower the other, but that wasn't the case at all. Each stayed true to its role — the opera cake wasn't overly sweet, and the milk foam on top of the mocaccino highlighted its smooth, mellow flavor.

Next time, dressed up, and bringing our parents

Even the sugar felt oddly special and upscale at this recommended large Namyangju café, haha. We both aren't big fans of coffee with strong acidity, but the slight acidity in Waltz and Dr. Mahn's Honduras wasn't off-putting at all, and it blended nicely with the nutty coffee flavor.

We'd just gone for a light drive, but the atmosphere and service were so good that I found myself thinking we should dress up more next time, and maybe bring our parents along after a walk around Dumulmeori or Mului Jeongwon nearby. If you're looking for a Bukhan River café, definitely make this a date spot!
