U&I Studio Hongdae Branch is a self-photo studio on World Cup Buk-ro in Mapo, Seoul, where advance booking is required. Our wedding shoot proper was right around the corner, and we were seriously worried because we both tend to freeze up like statues the moment a camera is pointed at us.
Everyone says you need to take a lot of photos before your poses and expressions start looking natural, right? So as both practice for the wedding shoot and a date, we booked U&I Studio, a self-photo studio near Hongdae, and went!
This place has really good reviews and a lot of users, so booking ahead is essential. If you're planning to visit, I definitely recommend reserving well in advance.
Arriving at U&I Studio Hongdae: from the entrance to the studio
I booked the Saturday 2pm slot. I arrived at the studio entrance and waited outside the door for a bit. The previous couple was still in the middle of their shoot, so barging in wouldn't have been polite, right? Following the posted instructions, I waited outside for a bit, and right around the reservation time, the friendly owner opened the door herself and welcomed us in. That thoughtful touch right from the start put me in a good mood.
Dresses, blazers and shoes: what U&I Studio Hongdae lends you
The biggest advantage of U&I Studio Hongdae Branch is that costume rental is available. The moment we walked in, I noticed the studio interior was much roomier and more pleasant than I expected.
The women's dresses come in a really wide range of colors and styles — pink, black, white, and more. You can check out the outfits in advance through U&I's blog link, and honestly, you absolutely must pick your outfit ahead of time!
Once you're actually there, the shooting time flies by at lightning speed, so if you spend it agonizing over what to wear, you end up wasting precious shooting minutes. Since I'd already picked mine out beforehand, I saved a lot of time.
Even better, men's blazer jackets are also available for rental! Guys don't need to bring a bag full of clothes. There are even shoes for both men and women in various sizes, so you could really show up empty-handed.
How the self-shoot works at U&I Studio Hongdae
After changing into our outfits and moving to the shooting zone, the owner very kindly explains how to use the camera and remote. Since it's a self-shoot, we pressed the shutter ourselves and shot freely however we wanted. After the explanation, the owner went into the back workroom, so we could shoot completely comfortably without worrying about anyone watching. And if any equipment trouble comes up in the middle, she comes right out to help, so there's nothing to worry about.
The studio also has a huge variety of props, so you can create all kinds of different concepts!
The concept: chalkboard prop and sunglasses
Here's another absolute game-changer tip — make sure to discuss what poses and concept you'll go for before you get there. Once you're standing in front of the camera, your mind goes completely blank and nothing comes to you if you try to think it up on the spot, haha. I used the chalkboard prop and sunglasses that were provided to go for a hip, cute vibe.
What 40 minutes of shooting produced, and the original files by email
The shoot at U&I Studio Hongdae Branch lasted about 40 minutes, and afterward the owner quickly emailed us every single photo file we'd taken. Once I actually saw the results, I was first amazed at how good the image quality was, and second, hit with a real wake-up call seeing my own awkward expressions... I really felt like coming here to practice was the right call!
We were pressing that shutter nonstop for what felt like a whirlwind 40 minutes. I couldn't believe how fast that time flew by...!
Between the high-resolution originals and the private, relaxed atmosphere to shoot in, it was such a satisfying time. We even snacked on the candy she'd thoughtfully set out in case our sugar dropped, and wrapped things up in a great mood.
