A hearty Korean meal in Suseong, Daegu

On days when I want a proper lunch, Korean food is always the easiest choice. This time I was looking for somewhere filling around Suseong and ended up at Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch. There's a dedicated shopping complex parking lot, so parking was easy too.

What the dining room at Cafe Dongi feels like

Walking inside, the space was clean and comfortable overall, making it a nice place to eat. The table spacing was reasonable so I could eat at ease, and the atmosphere felt relaxed enough to enjoy a full meal even during lunch hour. It's a clean space that would work well for a meal with family or friends too.

Not a café: Cafe Dongi is a Korean rice-meal restaurant

With a name like Cafe Dongi, you might first think of a café, but this place is closer to a restaurant serving a real Korean meal than a café. It's located in Suseongdong 1-ga, so it's convenient for anyone searching for lunch spots in Suseong, and the menu ranges from solo meals to dishes meant for sharing among several people. Best of all, I ordered a bunch of different dishes this time to try a little of everything.

What's on the self-serve bar: fried eggs and five-grain rice

Cafe Dongi also runs a self-serve bar with fried egg, five-grain rice, and seasonal drinks, which makes it especially good for anyone wanting to eat a really filling meal. At the self-serve corner you can even grab rice crackers for dessert, so both the appetizer and dessert side were covered. >,,<

Charcoal-grilled jeyuk set meal with a gentle smoky flavor

First, the charcoal-grilled pork bulgogi set (직화제육한정식밥상) had a gentle smoky char that paired really well with rice. The seasoning of the pork combined with what tasted like a direct-flame grilling technique made it the kind of dish that just calls for more rice, and it was filling enough for a full meal.

Hot kimchi jjigae that paired well with the pork

You can't skip kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) among Korean dishes! Kimchi jjigae is best served piping hot with a spoonful of rice alongside it. The kimchi flavor had soaked well into the broth, making it easy to keep spooning up throughout the meal, and it paired nicely with the pork bulgogi.

My favorite dish: tuna and young-radish bibimbap set

And the dish I personally liked best was the tuna-yeolmu bibimbap set (참치열무비빔밥상). The crunchy yeolmu (young radish greens) combined with tuna made for a dish that felt filling without being heavy. It's a great fit for when you want to eat rice with a variety of side dishes, and it would work well as a hearty lunch option too.

Tasting portion of sweet and sour pork on the side

We also ordered a tasting-size sweet and sour pork (맛보기탕수육) as a side, and having tangsuyuk at a Korean restaurant felt like a fun, different touch. Taking bites of the crispy fried pork made the whole spread feel much more generous.

Lemonade to finish after the saucy dishes

I also ordered lemonade with the meal. It was sweet, tangy, and refreshing, making it good to sip after eating something saucy like the pork bulgogi or sweet and sour pork. Instead of just eating dish after dish, adding a refreshing drink in between made everything feel cleaner in the mouth!

Good for solo lunch or sharing with a group

Overall, the menu had plenty of options, so it works whether you're eating solo and picking one dish, or visiting with several people and ordering different dishes to share. If you're in Suseong, Daegu looking for lunch spots in Daebong-dong or Korean restaurants in Suseongdong 1-ga, this is worth a visit. With familiar, comforting dishes like pork bulgogi, kimchi jjigae, and bibimbap, it shouldn't be hard to pick something no matter who you're with. I tried a wide variety of dishes this time, and next time I'd like to come back for the pork bulgogi or one of the other rice sets. Cafe Dongi Suseong 1-ga Branch is a great Korean restaurant in Suseong, Daegu for days when you're craving a hearty, home-cooked-style meal.
