Late dinner at a Beomeo-dong Daegu Korean restaurant: Banwoldang

In short

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a fire-grilled Korean restaurant on Beomeocheon-ro in Suseong, Daegu, in the Beomeo covered-road food alley. A late-evening visit brought squid and pork stir-fry for two, served on a stone plate that stayed hot to the last bite, plus a free countryside cheonggukjang doenjang stew that comes with any menu order. Between the smoky char, the fresh radish salad and the self-serve lettuce wraps, Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is a solid pick for a family or group dinner.

Exterior of Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch in the Beomeo underground road food alley

Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch is in the Beomeo underground road food alley, so with so many good restaurants nearby it was easy to find. There are lots of family-friendly spots around, like Eorini Sesang (Children's World), so it's popular on weekends and weekday lunches too.

Parking near Banwoldang Buja Sikdang and the mood inside

For parking at Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch, you can use the on-street public parking lot, and they also offer parking support, so it was convenient to come by car.

Inside, there were actually quite a lot of tables. It's popular enough among Korean restaurants in Suseong-gu that there's even a wait at lunchtime.

What's on the menu at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang?

Here's the menu at Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch in Daegu. The main dishes were stone-plate buja galbi ribs, fire-grilled squid pork, fire-grilled squid stir-fry, fire-grilled pork stir-fry, and spicy cream pork! The cream pork was a dish I'd never seen before — it looks like something anyone would enjoy, soft and delicious. I'm planning to try the cream pork stir-fry next time :)

Rice has to be ordered separately, and there was also buja bibimbap and doenjang stew that go well alongside. Since a free countryside cheonggukjang doenjang stew comes with any menu order, you can eat even more heartily.

Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch also does takeout — every menu item can be packed to go, and they say the portions are generous for takeout too.

They say Banwoldang Buja Sikdang only runs two locations — the main branch and this Suseong branch! There was always a wait when I visited the Banwoldang location, and even though I came to the Suseong branch late in the evening, it was still full of customers.

Tables were 2- or 4-person as the default, and group seating is available too — a solid Korean restaurant pick in Suseong-gu.

Self-serve lettuce wraps and banchan

In the middle of the restaurant, lettuce, garlic, and ssamjang were already set out, and if you ask, they'll bring you extra banchan too!

Free cheonggukjang doenjang stew and four side dishes

The main dish I ordered arrived. Buja Sikdang's cheonggukjang doenjang stew had a deep, savory flavor that paired really well with the main meat dish.

The side dishes came out just as neat and tidy — salad, bean sprouts, seaweed stalks, and radish salad, four types in all.

The doenjang stew wasn't the spicy kind — it let you really taste the doenjang itself, which I was very happy about.

The lettuce was kept fresh too, so you can just take as much as you'll eat at a time.

Squid and pork stir-fry for two: how was the stone-plate char?

The main dish I ordered, squid pork stir-fry, arrived! I'd only ever had the buja galbi ribs at Buja Sikdang before, so this was my first time ordering a pork dish here~

Squid pork stir-fry for two served on a stone plate

Mushrooms were piled on top, and since it comes out on a stone plate, it has the advantage of staying warm the whole time you eat.

I was going to order the regular pork stir-fry, but I spotted the version with squid added in and immediately switched to squid pork stir-fry instead ^^

A full spread of squid pork stir-fry and doenjang stew

The combination of the pork stir-fry and the doenjang stew went so well together and tasted great.

A well-seasoned bite of pork and squid

The squid itself was so tender and well-seasoned that it was easy to dig right in!

Picking up a piece of tender squid

We ordered the two-person portion and it was generous — you have to try mixing it into your rice! As a fire-grilled restaurant, this dish really let you taste that full smoky char.

The best wrap: lettuce, pork and fresh radish salad

The radish salad was refreshing, and honestly tasted better than at a lot of other restaurants I've been to. Even thinking about it now makes me want more~

The lettuce was fresh too — make sure to pile the meat and the crisp, tangy radish salad on top of the lettuce and try it that way.

It's already delicious as is, and the spice level is adjustable too, so next time I want to try it spicier! The smoky char really sets this place apart from others :)

A Korean restaurant in Suseong-gu, Daegu with a great variety of dishes — I recommend visiting Banwoldang Buja Sikdang Suseong Branch ❤️
