Whenever I go for Chinese food, isn't it always a struggle deciding between jjajang and jjamppong? And if you start craving tangsuyuk too, choosing takes forever!

Chinese food menu ordered at Mayway, a Cheomdan Chinese restaurant

This time at Mayway in Cheomdan, I ordered everything from the solo set meal — which lets you taste jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all at once — to fried rice, cream shrimp, and mixed dumplings. Here's the story of my visit to this Cheomdan favorite, great for when you want to try a bunch of dishes at once :)

What two people ordered at Mayway in Cheomdan Ssangam-dong

Mayway is a Chinese restaurant located in Cheomdan Ssangam-dong, Gwangju. Rather than just picking one menu item that day, I wanted to try several together, so I ordered quite generously.

  • Solo set meal - jjajang + jjamppong + tangsuyuk
  • Extra-large fried rice
  • Cream shrimp
  • Mixed dumplings - dimsum + jjamppong dumplings + fried dumplings

Writing it all out like this, we really did eat a lot haha🤣

As the dishes came out one by one and filled the table, it was the kind of spread that would look satisfying to anyone who loves Chinese food — from noodle dishes to cooked dishes to dumplings, it was a lot of fun getting to try a bit of everything!

Mayway's one-person set: jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk on one tray

Mayway's solo set meal comes with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk all served together, and it was my personal pick of the day. At Chinese restaurants I'm always torn between jjajang and jjamppong, so being able to try all three at once was perfect for someone like me who wants to eat a bit of everything.

Mayway's solo set meal with jjajang, jjamppong and tangsuyuk together

First, the jjajang! I mixed the black bean sauce thoroughly into the noodles and took a bite,

then immediately went in for a spoonful of jjamppong broth! That combo of jjajang followed by a sip of spicy jjamppong broth is just impossible to resist. Especially when you've ordered several dishes like this, alternating between jjajang and jjamppong is so much more enjoyable than sticking to just one thing. If you're hunting for good jjamppong in Cheomdan but don't want to give up on jjajang either, doesn't this kind of set sound perfect?

And with tangsuyuk included in the solo set, you get to enjoy all the popular Chinese restaurant favorites in one meal — plus, you can swap out the tangsuyuk for a different side dish if you prefer, so you can order according to your own taste. A bite of jjajang, a bite of jjamppong, a bite of tangsuyuk — eating this way is a different kind of fun compared to ordering just one dish, and you end up twice as full!

Extra-large fried rice and Mayway's self-serve rice and side dish bar

My other half ordered the extra-large fried rice. It felt like a shame to only eat noodles, so we ordered a rice dish too — you really can't skip fried rice at a Chinese restaurant!

But even if you don't order a rice dish, there's a self-serve bar with all the rice and side dishes you could want, so you could order other menu items and just get your rice there separately. Ordering the extra-large size to share with the other dishes made everything feel even more filling — with jjajang, jjamppong, and fried rice all on the table, this is a great lineup for a group where everyone wants something different to share.

Cream shrimp: the dish worth adding to the noodles

If you feel like just a meal item isn't quite enough, try ordering the cream shrimp from Mayway's cooked dish menu! Tangsuyuk is great when you go to a Chinese restaurant, but I can't help wanting to order cream shrimp whenever I see it on the menu.

Mayway's cream shrimp dish

The cream shrimp, coated generously in sauce, was a perfect size to enjoy in between bites of the other dishes — it has a totally different flavor from jjajang or jjamppong, which makes for a much more varied spread! If you're visiting with a group, wouldn't it be nice to order one of these cooked dishes together to share, rather than everyone just getting their own meal item?

Mayway's mixed dumpling plate: dimsum, jjamppong dumplings and fried dumplings

And out of curiosity, we also ordered the mixed dumplings! Instead of just one type on the plate, it came with a combination of dimsum, jjamppong dumplings, and fried dumplings all together. I personally love menu items like this that come with several varieties at once — picking through each one made it even more fun.

Mayway's opening event and complimentary fried sweet potato

This time at Mayway, we tried everything from the solo set meal with jjajang, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk to the extra-large fried rice, cream shrimp, and mixed dumplings! There's also an opening event running with ₩1,000 tangsuyuk and a chance to win ₩500,000 cash, so it's definitely worth a visit~

This is a place where you don't have to settle for just one dish — enjoy a heartier meal with a variety of noodles, rice, cooked dishes, and dumplings all together~

What I really liked was that on days when I want both jjajang and jjamppong, the solo set lets me have both at once, and with shareable dishes like cream shrimp or mixed dumplings on top of that, it's a great spot to visit with a group and order a variety of things in the spacious dining room~

Fried sweet potato served as a complimentary item

If you're in Cheomdan trying to figure out what to have for lunch, or just craving Chinese food one day, this place is worth stopping by — and be sure to go now while the fried sweet potato is still being served for free!

Scallion kimchi from the self-serve bar

Oh, and one more thing — they have scallion kimchi here, and it's honestly no exaggeration to say I ate my entire fried rice with it because it was that good.

I'm so happy a good Chinese restaurant opened in Cheomdan, and I think I'll be using it often going forward, both for delivery and in person!
