Gwangju gukbap restaurant with a free toddler meal: Gujeon Gukbap

I went on a little outing to Gwangju with my toddler. My other half needed to nurse a hangover from a work dinner the night before, so we headed to a Yongbong-dong favorite, Gujeon Gukbap. It's open 24 hours, so you're never restricted by time, and it's also pretty close to Champions Field, so if you're looking for a restaurant near Champions Field or gukbap near the stadium, this might be useful. Here's how our family's meal went!

Where is Gujeon Gukbap Yongbong Main Branch? Hours and parking

Gujeon Gukbap is a 24-hour, no-closed-days gukbap restaurant at 1382-3 Yongbong-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. It's open daily from 00:00 to 24:00, and there's parking near the back entrance.

When we visited, the restaurant felt clean and well maintained right away. The space was divided into seats lightly separated by partitions and a regular table area. High chairs were available too, which made it comfortable to visit with a kid.

The staff were kind, and while the tables are mostly set up for 4 people, they were spacious enough that even with a kid in tow, we could sit comfortably.

On the table, sesame oil, pepper, seasoning sauce, salt, and perilla seed powder were set out by default, so we could add seasoning or perilla powder to the gukbap as we liked.

Why does a gukbap restaurant start with sticky rice?

The first thing that arrived at our table at Gujeon Gukbap was sticky rice and dried seaweed. Turns out it comes standard when you order gukbap.

But honestly, I cannot resist the sticky rice + seaweed combo, haha. Chewy sticky rice with seaweed?! Both my partner and I love it, but our toddler was the one who really tore into it.

My partner and I each had one bite... and the rest was claimed entirely by our toddler. 😂 "More!" our kid kept saying, eating away. Before the gukbap even arrived, the sticky rice was already polished off with real determination.

Gujeon Gukbap's kimchi: green onion kimchi at the self-serve bar

Gujeon Gukbap seemed to take real pride in its kimchi, gukbap aside. Regular kimchi came as a side, and there was also green onion kimchi at the self-serve bar. It's Jeolla-do style kimchi, and I liked that the fermented seafood smell wasn't too strong, with a spicy kick standing out instead. It was great as a palate cleanser too — we ended up eating quite a bit before the meal even started.

My partner tried the green onion kimchi and said, "The green onion flavor really comes through, and it goes so well with the gukbap!" One spoon of gukbap, one bite of green onion kimchi — definitely a great pairing.

What does Jeju-style bracken gukbap taste like?

First up is the Jeju-style bracken gukbap I ordered. It's described as a local health soup from Jeju made with buckwheat and bracken fern simmered Jeju-style. It was a bit different from the photo, though — in the photo, the bracken pieces were visible, but what actually arrived looked almost fully blended in.

The flavor was familiar yet distinct from typical gukbap. If I had to describe it, it was somewhere between Gwangju-style duck soup and loach soup, with a very thick, porridge-like, soft texture layered on top. So if you're expecting a clear or spicy gukbap, it might feel unfamiliar. But if you like soft, thick textures or enjoy Gwangju-style duck soup, it's worth trying. Personally, I was a fan! :)

Ammppong sundae gukbap: is the pork smell strong?

My partner ordered the ammbong sundae gukbap. It came generously loaded with blood sausage and ammbong sundae (pork uterus sundae), and the broth had a deep, rich bone-broth character. Overall it leaned mild, so my partner, who usually likes bolder flavors, added a good amount of chili seasoning sauce for a bit of spice. The sundae didn't have much of a gamey smell, so I was able to eat it without any trouble too.

The ammbong sundae did have a faint distinctive smell, but according to my gukbap-savvy partner, "It's only noticeable because of pregnancy nausea, it's not really a strong smell." 😂 Anyway, being a true gukbap lover, my partner cleaned the bowl completely — fitting for someone who came to nurse a hangover, haha.

Free baby meal for children under 48 months

Gujeon Gukbap has a free "well-eating baby table" for kids under 48 months. It comes with sausage, braised quail eggs, seaweed, and a bone broth soup made for kids.

What personally impressed me most was the kids' menu. It's a combination kids can hardly resist. Having already discovered the joy of sticky rice, our toddler skillfully wrapped sausage and braised egg in seaweed, eating with real enthusiasm. The kids' bone broth soup came unseasoned, which makes sense for a kid's dish — if needed, you can add salt from the table to suit your child's taste. The broth itself was a genuinely rich bone broth.

Adding a plate of dumplings

We also added dumplings for our toddler, who ended up eating 3 of them alone, haha. From sticky rice and seaweed to the kids' table and dumplings — our kid put on a real eating show that day. Choosing what to order for a toddler when dining out can be surprisingly tricky, so having a dedicated kids' table like this was genuinely welcome.

Naver review event at Gujeon Gukbap

When we visited, there was also a review event running. Writing a Naver review got you a seasonal bibimbap or 100% Jeju cheonhyehyang (sweet citrus) juice. Since event details can change depending on when you visit, it's worth checking in-store if you're interested.
